To-Read Tuesday: Curious Me! Feelings by Avery Rabedeaux and illustrated by Kate Kronreif. I love a book focused on feelings, and this book is no exception. With my own books, I wanted to write the We Find Feelings Clues series to specifically focus in on how feelings can feel in the body. Similarly, my upcoming Feelings Head to Toe series talks about body sensations related to emotions in toddlers and models coping skills. I’m not surprised that I enjoyed this book, published by Free Spirit Publishing like my own books. It features eight different emotions and relates them to some of the physiological cues like tears, laughter, a wiggly body. I think reading this book and then diving into the Feelings Head to Toe books for a bit more about each emotion would be a great way to explore emotions with toddlers.

To-Read Tuesday: Llamaphones by Janik Coat. This book is part of the series that included the Onomatopanda book, which I adored. It takes literary devices and illustrates them using whimsical animal illustrations. In this story, the panda has been replaced with a fun llama. Each page spread shows a pair of homophones, like stair and stare shown on the cover. This is one of those books that I would use with younger children, likely the intended audience, but if I was teaching homophones to older children, I’d also want to use it and encourage them to make their own llamaphone illustrations. It’s clever and adorable and if you didn’t know what a homophone was before reading, you’d likely understand by the end.

To-Read Tuesday: Let’s Put That Away! My First Book of Organizing by The Home Edit’s Clea Shearer & Joanna Teplin, illustrated by Hsinping Pan. I really love an organization show, so I watched many episodes of The Home Edit. (Side note: my house does not look at all like a Home Edit house, but I do have a row of books in rainbow ROYGBIV order, inspired by The Home Edit.) I don’t love a celebrity book, so I was skeptical of this one before reading. It has a very simple question and answer structure- “Where do toys go? In the bins! Where do wet towels go? On the hooks!” I appreciated the repetitive nature for a book for young toddlers. I can see reading this and then making a version about your house or your classroom as a scripted story about how to clean up in a particular environment… which means I would tweak and add compost and recycling to the book, since the characters throw away things we wouldn’t throw away here.

To-Read Tuesday: Say Zoop! A Book of Sound by Hervé Tullet. This book is playful and interactive, similar to his other books. It features mostly spots and dots of different colors that are paired with sounds to make as you read. It’s silly and loud and fun. (I remember reading his Press Here book about 15 years ago, never having read an interactive book like that before. It was such an interesting and novel approach. Now he has so many of these kinds of books, and they are all just a delight.)

To-Read Tuesday: Onomatopanda by Janik Coat. I love a literary device, and onomatopoeia is such a playful one. Each page in this board book shows a panda doing a simple task with the picture labeled with onomatopoeia. He zips a raincoat, opens a door, and puffs out birthday candles. Illustrations are simple and the book has some fun design elements- textured icing on a cake and shiny bubbles in the bath. I know my son would have loved this book as a toddler!

To-Read Tuesday: VIP Very Important Preschooler by Cindy Jin, illustrated by Ella Bailey. This book has a simple structure. Very important preschoolers explain different jobs in the classroom that they have over the course of the week. If I were in the classroom, I’d likely read this when introducing the idea of a classroom job chart and shared responsibilities to keep our room safe and clean. It would be a great starting point for that discussion, in a very approachable way.

This week, I was lucky to start it off with the amazing preK teachers in Wilkes County, NC. We spent the morning practicing using the two frameworks from my book, Create and Emotion-Rich Classroom, and planning how to teach social skills in the upcoming school year. They were delightful hosts and everyone was so kind, including the table in the back that slipped me this little note. 🥰
