Firefighters train, brace for call-ups to fight wildfires Kitsap firefighters are trained to respond to wildland fires and they await the call as fire season is on the verge of heating up.
The 2019 Western Washington Interagency Fire Training Academy has closed the doors for this training season. The Academy saw 425 students register and attend classes. There were 700 Certificates handed out to students who took various classes throughout the Academy, with 1900 hours of instruction time. There were 126 Cadre members representing the Instructors, the Plans Section, the Training Specialists, the Finance Section, Safety, the Logistics Section, the Public Information Officers, the Operations Section, Human Resources, the Medical Unit, the IC's and the Agency Administrator. Behind the scenes the Wildfire Divison and the Tumwater Wildfire Cache coordinated orders placed and ensured they made a timely appearance at the Academy. The Olympic Region came in to camp with a new kitchen, 3 crews, 3 kitchen managers and a DOC crew. We also welcomed to this years Academy 95 members of the National Guard. They were a great addition to the Academy. We would like to thank all who attended the Academy this year. We wish you a safe and successful wildfire season. Be SAFE throughout the year, See it Say it, and have a great year. We look forward to your return next year should your training requirements be found at the Academy.

Students get experience today doing prescribed burns. Prescribed burns and backburns can be one of our most useful tools for fire mitigation. Reducing fuels on our landscapes so that when wildfires pass through they are smaller in size and lower in intensity.

While the Firefighting community is thought of as Family, these people are the real thing. These are our future fire fighters with their relative here at the Academy. We welcomed a few of these several years ago into the firefighting family, today we add 3 more. One pair we haven't been able to wrangle together yet. However we will prevail and add them in, so keep checking back!

Smokey Bear paid a visit to the local daycare, where he talked about the importance of fire prevention and safety. With help from the firefighters of Engine 466, he showed the kids how to use a fire hose! Thanks Smokey!

It takes command presence, and confident gesticulation, to be a fire fighter. These heros have modeled both proudly, and set a strong example for the WWIFTA graduates of 2019.
