Summer schedule changes can feel overwhelming for some children, even when the changes are fun. ☀️

Things like vacations, camps, different routines, later bedtimes, new caregivers, or school ending can impact regulation more than we realize. Preparing children ahead of time with visuals, countdowns, simple conversations, and consistent routines where possible can help transitions feel safer and more predictable.

A little preparation can go a long way in helping children feel more confident during big changes

To the BCBAs who are tired, discouraged, overwhelmed or questioning if they can keep doing this: the field still needs people like you.

The providers who care deeply about ethical care, individualized support, staff training, family collaboration, and meaningful progress are the reason this field keeps moving forward. Burnout doesn’t mean you’re failing, it usually means you’ve been carrying too much for too long.

There are still clinics, teams and people fighting to do ABA the right way. Don’t lose the part of you that wanted to help kids in the first place. 🤍

Targeting receptive goals in ABA = working on a child’s ability to understand and respond to language (like identifying objects, following directions, or pointing to named items).

These are skills that help children navigate everyday life more independently—following routines, understanding instructions, communicating with others, and making the world around them feel a little more predictable and accessible.

There are a few things in ABA that I will stand firm on every single time—no matter what. Because at the end of the day, these are kids. And they deserve care that is ethical, individualized, compassionate and actually meaningful to their lives.

1. ABA should never be about erasing a child’s personality. The goal is communication, independence, confidence and quality of life—not making a child appear “typical.”
2. Play is productive. Kids learn best when therapy feels natural, engaging and safe. They deserve to learn through play and real-life experiences.
3. If a skill only happens at the therapy table, it’s not generalized enough. Real progress shows up at home, in school, with peers, and in everyday routines.
4. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to ABA. Every child deserves individualized care built around their strengths, needs, interests and goals.
5. Ethical care will always matter more than fast results. I’ll choose compassionate, meaningful, evidence-based therapy over compliance-focused care every single time.

ABA should help children feel more understood, capable and supported in the world around them. Not force them to become someone they’re not. And that’s a hill I’ll gladly keep dying on.

Memorial Day means a little extra to our Brighter Futures family.

Being located near Fort Bragg, so many of the families we serve are military families and we know firsthand the sacrifices that come with that life. From deployments and transitions to long days apart, military families carry so much with strength and resilience.

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave everything for our country, while also holding space for the families and loved ones who carry that sacrifice with them every day.

Brighter Futures isn’t just our name. It’s the heart behind everything we do.

Every conversation, every milestone, every small moment of encouragement is rooted in helping children feel confident in who they are and supported in who they’re becoming.

We want our kids to grow up knowing they are important, capable, and worthy exactly as they are. Always.

Every time someone coughs in the clinic, everyone pauses for two seconds like, “was that a dry cough… or are we all going down together?”

Still thinking about our Autism Awareness event from April 🤍

Getting to see our families, kids, staff and community come together in one place reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

We already can’t wait for next year. What would YOU love to see at our next community event? 👀

ABA is a lot of things, but humbling? Definitely one of them. 😂

Sometimes you’re in the script, sometimes you are absolutely not invited to participate. But we love that communication! 👏🏼

Did you know our team includes both English and Spanish-speaking providers and staff?

We believe communication matters. And being able to support families in the language they’re most comfortable with helps us build stronger connections, trust and care every step of the way!
