September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease can cause complications that affect multiple body systems, sometimes requiring urgent care beyond pain management.

For EMS providers, new respiratory symptoms, neurologic changes, signs of infection, or worsening perfusion should prompt careful assessment and reassessment. Recognizing these warning signs can help guide supportive care and timely transport.

Knowing what to watch for makes it easier to recognize when a patient’s condition is changing and when the patient may need a higher level of care.

Hemorrhage control requires you to recognize what you’re dealing with, choose the right intervention, and know when it’s time to escalate. Once the bleeding is controlled, don’t move on too quickly. Confirm your intervention worked and continue reassessing for blood loss and signs of shock.

Strong patient care comes from knowing what to do, why you’re doing it, and what to look for next.
