Hello everyone! I wanted to take a moment to share a little bit about myself and why I chose to pursue a career in cosmetology. I come from a small town with limited opportunities, where life is simple but full of heart. As someone with a western flair, I’ve always been close to nature and animals, and I’ve learned the value of hard work, patience, and compassion from a young age.

But deep down, I’ve always had a passion for helping people feel beautiful and confident. I believe everyone deserves to see the best version of themselves, and cosmetology is my way of making that happen. It’s more than just a career to me; it’s a chance to boost someone’s confidence, brighten their day, and create a positive change in their life.

I’ve always been mature for my years, growing up fast and taking on responsibilities early on. Now, at 17, I feel like I’ve reached a turning point where I’m finally starting my journey. Starting my life now, with all the hard work I’ve put in to get here, feels like the best decision I could have made.

I’m beyond excited for this new opportunity and can’t wait to see where it takes me. Here’s to new beginnings, endless possibilities, and becoming the best version of myself!

It’s a new day, which means there’s a new ALICE ready to meet you. Or rather… four new ALICE faces ready to meet you. Say hello to Rose, Dorothy, Blanche, and Sophia.

The sun rises on another hot and sticky Miami morning. Four women sit around a small wicker table, sharing breakfast before rushing off to their busy days. At this stage in life, each of them imagined things would look different. Stable. Comfortable. Financially secure. Instead, they wake up every morning and continue working simply to stay afloat.

For Rose, people have always been her passion. When she’s not volunteering as a grief counselor, she’s putting in long hours at the television station, trying to land the next big story. Blanche slips into her heels and heads off to the museum, where she works to maintain not only exhibits, but appearances as well. And then there’s Dorothy, continuing to shape the minds of future generations through teaching, a demanding and often thankless profession she never imagined she’d still need at this point in her life. As each woman heads off to work, the weight of reality follows closely behind.

Living with roommates later in life was never part of the plan, but when finances become too overwhelming to ignore, plans change. Rose was left navigating the debt that remained after losing her husband. Dorothy continues dealing with the financial fallout of a difficult divorce. And Blanche, despite appearing polished and well-off, opened her home to roommates as a way to lessen a financial burden she never thought she’d face.

Each woman carries her own story, her own struggles, and her own worries. But they all share one thing in common: They are ALICE.

They are hardworking individuals forced to continue working well beyond the life they thought they’d have. They count every dollar, wondering if this month will stretch far enough to cover the mortgage, the electric bill, the groceries, or the water bill.

And in many ways, they represent the reality facing 26% of households right here in Adams County.

The Golden Girls will always be remembered as a beloved comedy about friendship and growing older together, but beneath the jokes and cheesecake was a reality many people still face today: doing everything possible just to make ends meet.

Those are the stories we’re shining a light on this week at United Way of Adams County.
