Public higher education workers should not need second and third jobs just to make ends meet.

Faculty and staff at community colleges, state universities and UMass campuses across Massachusetts are uniting through the Fair Wages Now! campaign to demand the investment they and their students deserve.

Public higher education employees in Massachusetts earn up to 30% less than their peers in comparable states. MTA members are calling on the Legislature and Gov. Maura Healey to use Fair Share funds to invest in public higher education and support contracts that raise wages by 30% over three years.

“A food pantry is not a substitute for fair wages, and the people who serve this state every day should be able to afford to live here,” said Salem State University advisor Rosa Taormina.

The campaign will continue on campuses across Massachusetts this fall, culminating in a statewide rally outside the State House on Nov. 20.

For 17 years, Tools 4 Teaching has helped Springfield educators stock their classrooms while giving gently used school supplies a second life.

Sponsored by the Springfield Education Association’ Committee of Retirees, Tools 4 Teaching provides Springfield Public Schools educators with donated classroom and office supplies at no cost. What began as an annual teacher swap in 2010 has grown into an ongoing effort that brings educators, retirees, schools and community partners together.

And the impact keeps growing: Through a partnership with East Longmeadow schools and the town’s Health Department, thousands of pounds of unused and gently used supplies have been collected and redirected to Springfield educators.

Have supplies to give? Tools 4 Teaching accepts donations of gently used educational and office supplies from individuals, school districts and businesses. Email [email protected] to inquire about donations.

What does the new federal school voucher program mean for public education?

MTA President Matt Bach and Vice President Deb Gesualdo are speaking out about what that could mean for Massachusetts public schools and students.

“We should not re-direct public funds to private institutions,” Bach told The Flipside.

Gesualdo underscored what is at stake for students: “Every dollar that we divert away from the public good into the wealthy has a human consequence.”

As Massachusetts considers whether to participate in the federal program, educators are making the case for investing public resources in the public schools and colleges that serve our communities.

A coalition is pushing for Gov. Maura Healey to opt into a federal school voucher program.

Last week, more than 60 members of , representing faculty and librarians at UMass Amherst, participated in a workshop focused on holding one-on-one organizing conversations ahead of their contract negotiations.
