So I'm trying to dig up this invasive plant. It's the kind of thing where you'd like to just snip it off at ground level, but it will only come back, twice as problematic. And, being me, I started thinking about audits (this is apparently not normal, but whatever). Anyway, as I'm digging up this massive root system, I keep churning up other junk - old pop bottles, barbed wire, chunks of concrete, plastic bags, you name it. It's just like an audit - you follow one root, and on the way you churn up all kinds of other stuff you might not have known about and certainly would rather have stay buried. They (and I) sift through all the loosened dirt, trying to locate the problem. This is why it's so very important to get things right and keep them there - once an auditor goes digging, everything is fair game. This is also why internal controls are important. If you chuck old pop bottles and barbed wire any old place, they'll turn up when you least expect it. Better to do the job right the first time.
