Roots and Wings Community Charter School A small, rural Expeditionary Learning charter school serving Kindergarten through 8th grade in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

RWCS is based upon the concept of a small community schoolhouse or “learning family.” It is designed to be an intimate, inter-age learning community ranging in age and ability between Kinder though 8th grades. The school emphasizes "hands on" project-based learning, the workshop model and culture of revision and adventurous farm and wilderness exploration as methods to motivate and engage students

in the educational process. RWCS has an ideal location for our educational purposes. Thanks to the Wilson Family Foundation, the school has nearby access to vast expanses of mountain wilderness, the wild and scenic Rio Grande gorge, and over 700 acres of privately owned camp land.

Last week the K-2 cohort went on their two night camping trip! They made pizzas in the horno to share with their families. Second graders went on their traditional hike as they prepare for third grade. Kids practiced skills like setting up a tent, keeping their tents clean, washing dishes, and Leave No Trace principles.

The days were filled with joy, play, crafts, and love!

These photos are from our 3rd–5th grade cohort’s camping trip, where they spent the day floating down the beautiful Rio Grande!

Last week our 3rd-5th graders went out on our spring camping trip!

This spring, RWCS did something we haven’t done in nearly a decade and returned to the Rio Grande! From our basecamp, students went out on adventures each day including: day hikes, rafting down the Rio with Far Flung Adventures, and skills sessions like knot-tying, knife safety and whittling, and basic wilderness first aid.

Our days were packed with play, adventures, cooking good food, and learning, and—despite the rain, the snow, the intense NM sunshine, and any other weather thrown at us—spirits were high and our students had an awesome week!

Looking for a fun and supportive way to help your child stay on track this summer? The New Mexico Summer Reading & Math Program is here to help students build confidence and strengthen their skills!

🗓 Dates: June 8th – June 30th
⏰ Time: 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Monday–Thursday)
📍 Location: Roots and Wings Community School

✔️ Free for ALL students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade
✔️ Small group instruction (max 4 students per group)
✔️ Focus on structured literacy and math skills
✔️ Led by trained instructors
