Team First's outlined it best:
- You can start applying for scholarships now!
- You don't need to be a senior to start looking.
- AND there more than just grade-based scholarships. Have Red hair? Left Handed? There's a scholarship for you.
If you attended our Annual Conference this spring, you would have the attended Show Me the Money: Finding Scholarships presented by Dr. Morgan where she outlined all of these opportunities.
As school restarts, be sure to start looking for opportunities to pay for college.

This summer, NYGEAR UP partnered with Math, Science, Research, and Technology High School in Queens, N.Y., to offer a credit-bearing summer program focused on STEAM curriculum.
Collaborating with Alchemist Studios, Lion Chaser Media, Inc., and Drone Cadets, students engaged in developing an AI Project, Lights Camera Content Film Production, and Drone Flight Club.
During the two-week AI Project, the Team First NYGEAR UP program challenged students to create Google Artificial Intelligence Voice, Vision Bots, and microcontrollers. They understood how these advanced technologies functioned. "Drone Cadets" continued the Drone Fight Club that began during the academic year by offering a program designed to provide students with firsthand, future-focused STEM experiences. The" Lights, Camera, Content" class allowed students to step into the spotlight and learn how to turn their ideas into powerful videos.
We are grateful to our partners for fostering a highly engaging learning environment that provides real-world technical skills our scholars can use in the future.

During Ossining’s Summer NYGEAR UP program, students strengthened their college and career readiness skills through a variety of experiences. They explored diverse career paths through discussions, virtual reality headsets, and reading through resumes, career ads and descriptions of needs in the market on recruitment websites. Students met and learned about being a drone pilot. They practiced flying drones virtually, followed by first hand experience flying on site!
Students further delved into their interests, reflected on their passions and created a rough draft of a cover letter and resume! Students discussed interviewing and the importance of presentation and professionalism. Community building activities fostered a sense of self, community building, communication and trust. Through a trip to Boundless Adventure, students continued to develop team building skills, confidence, collaboration, and real-world readiness skills.
The week ended with a celebration of participation, experiences and accomplishments. Students expressed their gratitude for a week of hands-on learning and fun!

Our Jamestown Community College site (SUNY JCC GEAR UP (Jamestown/Dunkirk)) held a multi-week Summer Academy for first generation NYGEAR UP students admitted to Jamestown City School District’s College in the High School program.
The program focused on building communication skills, teamwork, and resilience. Students took an introduction to communications class where they learned how to regulate emotions, work in teams, and problem-solve situations they may encounter in real-life. In addition, students spent a week building Drone Soccer Drones, learning the physical aspect of the build, the coding, and critical troubleshooting skills that come with a career in technology.
Students also had various opportunities to explore local museums including the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, where they learned about careers in museums including various positions available and corresponding education and training to obtain these positions.

A huge thank you to New York State Office of Information Technology Services for stepping up and providing 20 laptops for the NYGEAR UP Summer Academy at Ithaca College last month. With these laptops, our students got to dive into video game design and graphic creation, all with the guidance of Studio Labs. It was an amazing, hands-on experience that helped them explore different career paths and discover new possibilities for their futures.
Programs like this are so important, they give students the skills and confidence they need to prepare for college and their careers. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of New York students.

A special thank you to Alefiya Master, Founder and CEO of Mad Learn for the opportunity to present during yesterday's Cultivating Creativity session at this year's NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference.
We spoke about engaging students on the design thinking process through the creation of mobile apps at last year's Summer Academy. We shared some strategies around engagement through STEM-based app camps and activities and talked about how we plan for our Summer Academies.
We're excited to take what we've learned from this year's Annual Conference and help make our program better than ever!

The Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College embraced our kids with open arms, offering them an incredible opportunity to step into the world of Ithaca College students.
From being on camera to working behind-the-scenes they immersed themselves in every aspect of the experience. They stepped out of their comfort zone and into the bright lights. It was truly unforgettable, and we’re thrilled to see the inspiration and skills they’ve taken away from it!
