Tinnitus may be the diagnosis people know, but it isn't always the only condition involved.

In some cases, Veterans pursue secondary service connection for other conditions when medical evidence supports a link to an already service-connected disability. Tinnitus is one condition that's frequently discussed in these conversations, but every claim is evaluated on its own facts and evidence.

Learning how secondary service connection works can help you better understand the VA claims process.

If you asked me to look at your VA claim today, I wouldn't start with the forms.

I'd start with the story.
- What happened?
- What's already documented?
- What's missing?

Only then would we talk about the next step.

Diagnosed with flat feet?

That diagnosis is only the starting point.

The VA rates acquired flatfoot under Diagnostic Code 5276, and the percentage depends on the severity of the condition not simply whether pes planus appears in your medical records.

The VA may consider findings such as pain with use or manipulation, swelling, calluses, pronation, deformity, Achilles tendon changes, and whether arch supports or orthopedic shoes provide relief.

It also matters whether the condition affects one foot or both.

That is why your records should explain more than β€œmy feet hurt.” They should accurately document what happens during use, what your provider observes, which treatments you have tried, and whether those treatments improve your symptoms.

A diagnosis identifies the condition.

Detailed medical evidence shows its severity.

ot every medical appointment has the same objective.

A treatment visit is designed to support your health and ongoing care. A C&P exam is designed to evaluate your condition for the VA's disability claims process by documenting medical evidence and answering specific questions requested by the VA.

Knowing the purpose of each appointment can help you walk in with the right expectations.

MYTH ❌ - Your VA claim is a one-and-done process.

FACT βœ… - Your eligibility can change. New VA policies and presumptive conditions may mean you're entitled to benefits that weren't available when you first filed.

One of the biggest misconceptions about VA benefits is that your first claim decision tells the whole story.

It doesn't.

The VA periodically updates its policies and recognizes new presumptive conditions. As those rules evolve, some veterans may become eligible for benefits they didn't qualify for when they originally filed.

That doesn't mean every previous decision changes, but it does mean it's worth staying informed instead of assuming nothing can.

If it's been a while since you reviewed your benefits, now is a good time to understand what the current rules say.

The appeal is filed. Then comes the question every veteran asks:

"How long is this going to take?"

The honest answer? It depends.

The Board reviews appeals in docket order.

That means:
βœ”οΈ Some appeals move faster than others
βœ”οΈ Hearing requests often take longer
βœ”οΈ Waiting is part of the process

Understanding the timeline won't speed it up.

But it can help set realistic expectations.

If your knees crack, pop, or just plain hurt every time you take a step, you aren't alone. In fact, "limitation of flexion" of the knee is the second most common service-connected condition out there.

Over 2 million veterans are rated for this right now. But a lot of guys are sitting at a 0% or 10% rating when their actual range of motion qualifies them for more.

The VA doesn’t care how much it hurts to move, they care exactly where the movement stops.

If you want to maximize your strategy and understand exactly how the VA measures your knee under Diagnostic Code 5260, swipe through. πŸ‘‡

"Everybody knows what happened."

Unfortunately, that's not evidence.

When it comes to 1151 claims, the question isn't whether you're frustrated.

The question is whether the records can show:
βœ… An additional disability or worsening condition
βœ… VA treatment or care occurred
βœ… A direct connection between the two

That's where many veterans discover the difference between a bad outcome and a documented claim.

Evidence tells the story.

Most veterans know about service-connected disabilities.

Far fewer know about 1151 claims.

If a new disability developed, or an existing condition became worse after VA medical care, treatment, an examination, or certain VA programs, there may be a separate path to compensation worth understanding.

Many veterans never ask the question because they assume:

"If it didn't happen during service, it doesn't count."

That's not always the case.
