Your best employee isn't leaving because of pay.

They're leaving because you made mediocrity comfortable and excellence exhausting.

Every day you avoid the hard conversation with an underperformer, you're not protecting team harmony. You're punishing the person who's been carrying it.

Accountability isn't cruelty. Watching your top performer burn out while you stay 'nice' is.

Swipe through the 3 part script I give every leader who's ready to have the conversation they've been avoiding.

You've got a rotten apple on your team. Ignoring it won't make it go bad somewhere else.

The apple pie method:

1. Identify the apple before it spreads. Quiet undermining, gossip, missed deadlines nobody flags. Name it early.

2. Cut around the rot, don't toss the whole apple. Get specific: attitude, reliability, respect. You're managing a nameable issue, not a vibe.

3. Have the conversation you've been avoiding. Here's what I'm observing. Here's the impact. Here's what needs to change. No cushioning.

4. Decide, don't drift. The behavior changes or it doesn't. Drift is how one rotten apple becomes a rotten team.

If you're avoiding that conversation right now, you already know who I'm talking about.

Stop trying to be liked by your team. It is making you a worse leader.

When you chase likability, you avoid hard feedback, let standards slip, and promote the wrong people.

You did not build a team. You built a comfort zone.

Your job is to make your team better, not to make them comfortable.

What hard conversation have you been avoiding? That avoidance is costing you more than you think.

Ready to lead with respect instead of likability? Email [email protected].

"Kinda chic" is everywhere right now, so here's the leadership version.

None of this is groundbreaking. It's just what actually works when you stop managing for comfort and start managing for results.

Which one hit closest to home? Tell me in the comments.

Calling in a consultant doesn't mean something went wrong.

It usually means someone finally cared enough to get it right.

The leaders who reach out aren't broken. They're just too close to see what's actually holding their team back.

No theory. No 12-week frameworks. Just the honest conversations that keep getting avoided.

If you've been thinking we could use some outside eyes on this, that thought is worth a conversation.

Your best employee is not leaving because of the company. They are leaving because of you.

Most managers never see it coming. And that is the problem.

If your top performer is going quiet, missing their usual energy, or suddenly "just doing their job," that is not a phase. That is a resignation letter being written in their head.

And if you want the full framework for keeping your top talent, email me at [email protected].

Your title doesn't make people brag about you. Your behavior does.

The best manager you ever had? You don't remember their KPIs. You remember how they made you feel.

Here's what that actually looks like in practice.

If you're in leadership, hard conversations ARE your job.

Most leaders avoid them because they don't know where to start.

Here's a 3-part structure that works every time.

1. Open with the observation.
2. Name the impact.
3. State the expectation.

The conversation doesn't have to be perfect. It has to happen.

You hired the wrong person.

And if you're being honest with yourself right now, you knew it in the interview.

Most leaders hire on potential and fire on performance. It feels optimistic. It feels fair.

But it's exactly how you end up with a team being held hostage by one person's bad behavior.

Here's what the smartest leaders do instead.
