“There’s nothing inside of a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly.” - Buckminster Fuller
What we omit or willfully forget in such platitudes are the accommodations inside the cocoon or chrysalis. If it were a rental listing it might read: ‘You will find yourself inside of a tight shell of your own making. Feel free to roam about the cabin if only in your mind. Any physical movement you attempt will likely be met with equal and opposite force as the space you are in is all designed to keep you in place. We suggest that you freely move on a molecular and cellular level. It may seem disconcerting at first and most uncomfortable to disintegrate at this level, but you will emerge from your stay here more beautiful, capable and alive than you could ever have imagined. And, you will completely forget about your stay here. Please contact us for rates and availability. Sincerely, Management.

Too Important

For over sixteen years I had a two sided reader board sign on the main street of my area. And every week for sixteen years I changed the two messages on that sign. My intent was to have messages that did one of three things, 1. To make people laugh 2. To make people think or 3. The real prize, to make people think and laugh. Yes, I threw in a few self-promoting messages and of course there were seasonal and topical messages as well. I tried not to repeat myself, but I am sure there were some repeats. Given that in that sixteen plus years there were approximately 1664 message opportunities, I think I can safely say that I posted about 1200 unique messages that met my criteria for posting. Unique messages to the sign, borrowed from many and occasionally an original by me. Over all those years and with all those messages there was one message that stands out as the one that generated the most complaints. I have pondered why this generated so much reaction and have several theories, but I would like to hear what you might think the reason is that it created so much reaction.
The message was – “Life is too important to be taken seriously”
What do you think?

Dr. Andrea Holzner, PhD, MPhil, CCP Gerontologist

Maya Plisetskaya, a Russian prima ballerina for the Bolshoi Ballet, danced well into your 60's for the ballet and continued pursuing her passion (s) until her 80's.

Dementia or Alzheimer's disease changes our cognitive processing, yes. It does not, does not, does not, impede a person's memory of their passions! If you are caregiving for someone that has dementia or Alzheimer's continue to create an opportunity for their passions. Yes, it may be modified, but continue to allow passions to be realized. Learning how to communicate is essential. Let's chat, shall we?!

Human rights continue the entire life span! The entire life span!
Passions, affection, socializing, music, dance, literature, art, gardening, musicianship,...whatever the passion, a person has the human right to be able to express themselves and engage in what brings joy. Yes, dementia or Alzheimer's changes the scope but it does not, does not, does not, mean the end to passions.

1. Understand dementia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, aging.
2. Learn to communicate with a new approach
3. Show patience, kindness, and compassion
4. Change your attitude about aging
5. See human rights as a life long given for one's entire life
6. Seek guidance by a gerontologist that can educate, support,
and provide planning for aging changes
7. Find beauty in all lives
8. Create opportunities for loved ones to continue their passions

Aging is a process. Often caregivers find themselves instantly in a caring role. Learning how to be a caregiver requires engaging in community as Alzheimer's Association or Oregon Care Partners, or a gerontologist, specializing in aging and age-related issues. There is support for you and your loved ones.

In the 80s, the Bolshoi ballet came to Portland and Maya Plisetskaya danced the dying swan scene, and then did a full encore. To this day,I carry that beauty with me. She danced it in her 60s.

Live your passion. If you are a caregiver, and your loved, one has Alzheimer’s, remember their passions, and help them explore the reality

Physical change brings about mental awareness and draws us into each successive stage of life. To fully enjoy each of these stages one must have good health and so the following tools may help to evaluate where we are with our health and give us some targets to shoot for with our health.
Areas of life that impact our health:
• 8 areas of health: (Goal: Level 3 in at least 5 areas, level 4 in three with one verging on a level 5; financial is artificial and of less relevance at a level 3 or above)
o Physical
o Mental/emotional
o Spiritual
o Environmental
o Occupational
o Financial
o Nutritional/chemical
o Family/community
• Each area will be in 1 of 5 levels of performance. The goal is to have 4 areas at least at a level 3 and 3 areas at a level 4 with one verging on or at level 5 (It is not possible to maintain a level 5 for prolonged periods of time)
o Level 1 Awareness – Of health and responsibility, chaos
o Level 2 Reluctant Willingness – to try new things, to change, struggle
o Level 3 Inquiry – seek wisdom from others, taking some action, comfortable
o Level 4 Commitment – implementing and mastering actions
o Level 5 Mastery – Optimal function, exceptional performance

“God Whispers”

Interesting story, metaphor, I have heard from ministers, motivational speakers and practice management “gurus” many times over the years is the one about “A jeep, a boat and a helicopter.” It has a special meaning to me that I will explain later, however, for now I ask you to just read the story and see if you can relate it to any time in your life or to any situation. It can have multiple meanings for different people or even different times and so you don’t have to feel a connection right at this moment.
