Just across the hillside from Putney, Joe Fichter ’71 has recently crafted larger than life metal horse sculptures. For now, they sit in his pasture where local friends (many Putney alumni, themselves) can admire each unique detail. Later this summer, the horses (named Jupiter, Juno, and Zev) will be transported to their final home in the desert of Moab, Utah.
Joe has been connected to Putney for decades, first as a graduate in 1971, then as a visiting artist-in-residence, and later as faculty member from 1983-2013. Even today, Joe works closely with Putney’s current sculpture instructor (and alum), Brian Quarrier, who helped construct components for these massive horses. And remember the striking cow sculpture that now welcomes you to campus? Joe was an evaluator for the student-artist’s (Gabe Hodgman ’26) final exhibition!
