Stone Laboratory Stone Laboratory is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States.

Stone Laboratory has been an invaluable asset in freshwater biology research, science education and outreach. The lab serves as a base for more than 65 researchers from 12 agencies and academic institutions, all working year-round to solve the most pressing problems facing the Great Lakes. In addition to its role as a research facility, Stone Lab offers 30 college-credit science courses each summer for undergraduate and graduate students, advanced high school students, and educators. The hands-on sessions get students out into the field or out on the lake to study courses like biology, geology, and natural resources.

Before the 2026 Friends of Stone Lab Open House back in September, some of our Biological Field Station Assistants (BFSA) showed our education Eastern Fox Snake Bernadette things she had never seen before including our Stone Lab trifold, bird beaks on a dry erase board, and a smallmouth bass in a tank.

Come out to Farm Science Review (FSR) at the Gwynne Conservation Area and talk with Felecia Groom, Stone Lab Curriculum Specialist. Our booth will be out on Thursday, September 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the tents near the entrance to the Gwynne.
