We would like to wish our very own, Shannon Smith, a happy retirement. One word for Shannon is “FABULOUS!” We will miss the way she kept us organized, how she added pizazz to all projects, and the love she shared each day through serving others. Dear Lamar County Schools Families,

Lamar County Schools has been in contact with Lamar County Road Services and EMS regarding the severe weather that moved through the Purvis community Wednesday evening.
Due to the damage and hazardous conditions in parts of the Purvis and Baxterville communities, all schools in Purvis and Baxterville will operate on a 2-hour delayed start on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Buses will run where routes are safe; however, some students may not be able to be picked up due to road conditions, debris, and downed power lines. Please know these circumstances will be taken into consideration regarding school attendance.

At this time, no school facilities have sustained damage, and all campuses currently have power. We want to continue providing a safe place for our students, along with breakfast and lunch services.

All Sumrall, Oak Grove, and Lumberton schools will operate on their normal schedules.

We will continue to be in communication with authorities and monitor any future weather conditions and will contact you if any of these plans change.

The Lamar County Schools family asks that you keep the families and communities of Baxterville and Purvis in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding.

Please continue to be safe,

Dr. Wesley Quick
Superintendent

REACH AWARDEES 🌟 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI

Across Mississippi, communities are stepping up in powerful ways to support children and families. The 2026 Risk & Reach Report from the Children’s Foundation of Mississippi highlights both the challenges facing our state and the people and organizations working every day to create stronger opportunities for the next generation.

Today we are recognizing our 2026 REACH Awardees from Southeast Mississippi! These awardees were selected from nominations submitted across the state and represent meaningful efforts happening within their communities to support children and families. Their work reflects the commitment, collaboration, and care that helps children thrive. From local programs to community driven initiatives, these efforts show how people across Mississippi are investing in brighter futures for our state’s youngest residents.

You can learn more about their work and receive your own copy of the 2026 Risk & Reach Report when it launches at the Children’s Foundation of Mississippi Summit on April 29–30. Join us for a statewide gathering focused on data, solutions, and the people working to strengthen opportunities for Mississippi’s children and families.
