Casa Purchase

Casa Purchase Casa Purchase is an outreach center for Latin American Studies. Our goal is to reach out to the loca But our greatest resource is our people.

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Casa Purchase, an Outreach Center for Latin American Studies. This initiative was born of the desire to reach out to our local Latino population to work collectively in those areas they define as most important. We want Casa Purchase to weave together the educational, artistic, and research opportunities of our college with the needs of our local residents and of

ficials, their schools, and their organizations. We have a lot to offer: Purchase College combines the liberal arts and sciences with conservatory training in the visual and performing arts. Our campus has incredible resources, including the Neuberger Museum of Art and the Performing Arts Center, whose programs and exhibitions are enjoyed by many. We are a vibrant community of scholars and artists dedicated to teaching, conducting research, and producing art. We have a terrific group of students who are talented, creative, curious, and eager for opportunities, living among community members with fascinating and complex life experiences and needs and a thirst for a better chance. I do believe that harnessing all that energy is our challenge here at Purchase and I encourage everyone to think about ways we can work together. This is our task if we are truly committed to making significant contributions to transform our lives and the lives of our neighbors. On this website, you will find information about our local partners and events, and academic and cultural activities. For those new to Purchase, the links will give you access to campus resources. Our students, staff, and faculty will find possibilities for senior projects, internships, service learning, and volunteering. If there is anything we don’t have here, please ask us.

You are invited to join us for the final student exhibition of the course "Historia, Memoria e Identidad: the Latinx Experience through Storytelling." Professor Leandro Benmergui’s students will be presenting the oral histories they've recorded with their families, local community members, and individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean. These narratives capture the diverse Latinx experiences in the US—spanning migration, hopes, dreams, desires, and the challenges faced by Latino communities in the NYC area.

This course is part of the VOCES project: Oral Histories and Spanish for Heritage Speakers, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The stories shared will also become part of a digital archive hosted by the Purchase Library. Additionally, we welcome anyone interested in recording their own stories in audio or video during the event.

Location: Humanities Building 2047

Professor Mariana Muaze explores the intersection of race, history and visual culture from the second half of 19th century Brazil, focusing on photographic representations of enslaved wet nurses.
