“The Firsts”- so well said!! And we persevere on!!

There is lots of truth in the assurance that you’ll find your stride, your rhythm, and your new normal for life while your service member is away. I always find my path forward alone, but not until I have experienced all of the “firsts” that the separation brings.

The first family dinner without daddy at the head of the table to lead prayers.

The first after-dinner walk with the kids. Daddy would usually be the one pushing the stroller and pointing out bugs or flowers for the boys to inspect.

The first bedtime routine. Daddy does bedtime in our home, and I can never sing my way through the sweet lullabies he would usually croon for the kids without weeping.

The first night alone in a big empty bed. I cry a little. Then I lock up the house, leave a few lights on, and turn on a mindless television show to distract me from my loneliness. Eventually, sleep a little.

The first grocery store trip. I don’t need to pick up his preferred sacks, his razors, his toiletries, or his favorite beer.

The first Sunday at church. Standing with my head high and three boys fiddling, squirming, and talking too loudly in the pew. I spend the whole service wishing I had my teammate with me, and then I say a prayer that wherever he is, he is safe and well.

The first weekend. Weekends used to mean Daddy time, grilling, playing, more activities, and not least importantly, a break for Mommy. Instead, it is just another day and a certain emptiness in having nobody singing in the kitchen while the waffles cook.

The first load of laundry. The one where I fold and put away the last few things Daddy wore before he left. They no longer smell like him, and I close the drawers knowing they’ll go untouched for a while.

The first hardship. A sick kid. A flat tire. A minor home repair. A broken washing machine. Murphy’s Law will always strike hard and fast.

The first time your child asks when Daddy is coming home. And you just don’t know the answer.

The firsts hurt in a special way, a little more than the seconds, thirds, hundredths, and “who-knows-how-many-ths.” It’s okay to acknowledge that hurt, and to feel it deeply. Then, when the pain has passed, grab your Hershey’s Kiss from the jar of chocolate “kisses” from Daddy counting down until he returns, and put one foot in front of the other.

You can do it, if you can just get through the “firsts.”

Home

What do you say when someone asks you where home is??

“In the military it is common to refer to home as the place where your “stuff” is. Ask a Soldier or Sailor or any other member of the Service where he or she is from, and you may be asked in return, “When?” Military Brats may remember their bedroom windows as looking out on a Japanese garden, or a German village street, or a Florida palm tree, or a snow-capped Alaskan mountain. Such students most likely attended four or five or six different schools en route to a high school diploma. A military spouse will recall having yard sales every year or two to in preparation to move the family to the next assignment. Home is new neighborhoods and neighbors. Home is in many places and takes many forms. Home is a waypoint, a state of mind.”
