Congrats to Abbey Lane for a historically dominant senior season in which she owned the circle and earned All-Met Player of the Year honors! It was a pleasure watching you perform in HS! Best of luck at the next level!!!

I want to just say thank you for the kind post and all the responses about this year's softball team. We work very hard at the concept of 'team' and I have a great one. The work of my entire staff of Rob Cole, David Stokes, Amber Bartling, and Hannah Thomas is super! Nothing could be done without them. Finally, what is our secret? Lots of great young softball players and more importantly great young ladies. I have had the great good luck to fall into Western Loudoun where the softball families are outstanding! Thanks to everyone.

So you graduate 6 seniors from your 2023 State Championship team, 4 of which were college commits, you only have 8 returning players for the 2024 season, and every HS softball team in the metropolitan area is gunning to beat you in 2024 because they believe you are vulnerable. What do you do? You retool and coach up your incoming freshman and sophomores and coach your upper classman in the principles of leadership and pushing through adversity and go 26-0 and win back-to-back state titles. That’s what Coach Spicer and the Woodgrove staff did to capture the school’s 7th state title in its 13 years of existence.

Coach Spicer, Coach Rob, and Coach Stokes instilled in the players the tradition and values of Woodgrove softball, made the girls work hard in practice, never lowered their expectations, and then adjusted their game day approach to leverage the strengths of their players and reeled off 26 straight wins, one of which was against the WV state runner up and two of which came against teams that would captured state titles in other VHSL classes. That’s a helluva coaching job! So congratulations to Coach Spicer and the Woodgrove staff on another great season, another state title, and for being awarded the VHSL Class4 Coach of the Year Award!

06/17/2024

Congrats to senior Abbey Lane on being named 1st Team All State Pitcher AND for being name VHSL Player of the Year!! Abbey displayeda solute dominance in the circle in 2024 and has been mowing down the opposing batters for her entire time at Woodgrove. And BTW, she can hit too! You will be missed but we are so excited to see you at the next level!

06/17/2024

Congrats to junior Erynn Thompson for being named 1st Team All-States 2nd Base! A clutch hitter who can pack a heck of a punch at precisely at the right time!

06/17/2024

Congrats to sophomore Virginia Dowell on making 1st Team All-States First Base! Not only can she pick it out of the dirt but she can hit it out of park!

06/17/2024

Congrats to freshman Abbey Davis on making 1st Team All-States Outfield in her freshman year! It’s true what they say……speed kills and Abbey has a lot of it!

Finals Recap
The Wolverines were still riding high from the Friday’s dramatic walk off HR by Erynn Thompson when they took the field for Saturday’s Finals Championship game on Saturday.

Senior Abbey Lane showed why she is the 2024 Virginia Softball Player of the Year and in the running for MaxPrep’s Gatorade Player of the Year when she set the tone early, striking out the side in the 1st inning. She then singled on a ground ball to centerfield with two outs in the top of the first but the Wolverines were unable capitalize and push her across the plate.

Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the third inning. “Get on, get over, and get in” went into effect with sophomore Carly Franzen opening the inning with a walk. Franzen then stole second and advanced to third when Abbey Davis singled on a bunt. Junior Erynn Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Franzen from third. Abbey Lane then reached on an error by the SS and Abbey Davis scored from 2nd.

In the bottom of the fourth the Wolverines added another run when Emma Tokarchic, running for catcher Cayden Spark who had previously singled, was driven in when Carly Franzen singled to left field.

Faith Barker opened the bottom of the fifth with a line drive single to left field. Junior Grace Anderson then scored Barker by hitting an RBI double to left field to push the score to 4-0.

In the sixth Lane then got a little help from her defense when Thompson dove to make the catch on a weak pop up at second and then promptly doubled up the runner at first from her knees. Thompson also helped on the offensive side of the ball in the sixth when she homered, her 2nd in two days, to push the score to 6-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, with another state championship in site, Lane took control and struck out the first and third batters. With a runner at 2nd and two outs Faith Barker secured the victory and the state title when she ran down a fly ball to left. The celebration was on as the players rushed to each other, hugging and jumping into each other’s arms, and capping off what was truly a remarkable season!

Highlights 2024 VHSL State SemiFinals vs Hanover 6-7-2024

Photos from Woodgrove High School Softball's post 06/08/2024

Moving on to the Finals……Semi-Finals Recap
The Wolverines traveled to Western Ablemare HS on Friday to take on the Hanover Hawks in the VHSL State Semi-Final. The contest proved to be a battle between the heavyweights of the Class 4 division with Woodgrove heading into the game sporting a 24-0 record while Hanover headed into the game with a 21-1 record. And the two teams lived up to the billing.

Hanover got things started early with a two run HR in the first inning. Those were the first earned runs that Senior Abbey Lane allowed on the season and the first the right hander surrendered in 28 games dating back to last year’s Regional final (May 30th 2023). That is one helluva streak, one which will not be matched for a very long time or possibly ever.

The Wolverines usually potent offense was slow out of the gate going down in order in both the first and second innings. Hanover then pushed the lead to 3-0 with another HR in the the top of the third.

The Wolverines chipped away at the lead in the fourth after Lane doubled to left field. Junior Faith then earned a walk in which Lane advanced to third on a wild pitch. With junior Grace Anderson at the plate Lane then scored on another passed ball. Anderson then singled on a hard grounder ball to left field and Barker advanced to third. The Wolverines offense then stalled was unable to capitalize and push anymore runs across the plate in the inning.

Lane then settled in striking out the side in the fourth and then, with the exception of a sneaky bunt in the top of the 7th, didn’t allow another hit for the remainder of the game. She finished the game with 14 strikeouts.

The Wolverines chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Taylor Harper earned a walk and then promptly advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a passed balls. Harper then scored on a wild pitch to push the score to 3-2 where it remained until the bottom of the seventh.

With one out in the seventh Junior Aja Wheeler earned a walk after working the count full and Abbey Davis then laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing the runner to 2nd. With two outs and the tying run in scoring position junior Erynn Thompson stepped to the plate and the Wolverines had hope. After watching a first pitch strike, hope then turned to reality when Thompson smashed a walk off HR to centerfield on the 2nd pitch to propel the Wolverines to the Finals. The Woodgrove faithful went berserk and you could hear the roar of the student body and administrators back home at school all the way down in Crozet VA. Get on, get over, and get in…….all the way to the Finals.
