Upper Elementary students are learning about water scarcity and reading about people in Sub-Saharan Africa who have to walk for up to 3 miles each way every day to access clean water. They were challenged to build a water carrier to transport five one-gallon jugs of water (the average amount carried) using only items found in nature. They built/prototyped, tested and worked as a team to carry the water for 0.35 miles.

People often question if higher level math can be creative and project-based…I always answer “absolutely!” This was one of my favorite projects from years ago. Calculus students applied Integration and Finding Volume using the Disc Method to prove the formula. Utilizing the wood shop, the art room, etc they built 3-dimensional models, calculated the actual volume of the discs and then compared it to the calculated volume using the formula. Their work was gorgeous and their effort was amazing to watch. They had so much fun!! Who says Math can’t be fun???
