A collaborative, faculty-led merger of existing programs in Architecture, Construction Management, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture spurred the creation of the new School of Design + Construction at Washington State University in July of 2012. The school currently includes 33 full or part-time faculty and roughly 650 graduate and undergraduate students across the four disciplines, estab

lishing it as one of the largest schools at WSU and uniquely positioning it within a university-wide strategic effort towards interdisciplinary research and teaching. The school also features long-standing disciplinary traditions, with dedicated faculty delivering top quality instruction for which its programs have become institutionally notable, highly regarded across the West, and professionally accredited (by NAAB, ACCE, CIDA, and LAAB). Together with a larger initiative to foster graduate education and research at WSU, the School of Design + Construction (SDC) offers the Master of Architecture degree along with Master of Arts in Interior Design and Master of Science in Landscape Architecture degrees, and is working to expand the professional graduate degree offerings in Interior Design and Landscape Architecture. The school also offers bachelors’ degrees in each of its undergraduate programs—among the largest, most popular, and most rigorous at the university. Domestic and international faculty-led tours and study abroad programs have become staples of program excellence, offering cross-disciplinary encounters as well as crucial national and global student exposure. Student organizations are well-represented and active both on campus and throughout the region, providing the school with a significant public presence befitting of its land-grant status. The SDC is administered by the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture (VCEA). The SDC Lecture Committee is privileged to invite you to "Mediating Mechanisms," a virtual lecture, by Felicity Scott

This lecture will return to the space colony visions of Gerard K. O’Neill during the mid-1970s, interrogating his distinctly imperial ambition to create new New Worlds. Why, I want to ask, was architecture deemed necessary to O’Neill’s worldbuilding exercise at this historical moment? Why were questions of design centered in what was avowedly a giant civil engineering exercise? To address these questions “Mediating Mechanisms” will trace the complex topology at work between O’Neill’s semantic claims and the cybernetic organizational logics of three “experts” he invited to speak to questions of designing the built environment.

Felicity D. Scott directs the PhD program in Architecture and co-directs the program in Critical, Curatorial and Conceptual Practices in Architecture (CCCP) at Columbia University’s GSAPP. Her books include Architecture or Techno-Utopia: Politics After Modernism (2007), Ant Farm (2008), Outlaw Territories: Environments of Insecurity/Architectures of Counter-Insurgency (2016), and Disorientations: Bernard Rudofsky in the Empire of Signs(2016). Her current research addresses architecture’s complex relations to techniques of global governance in the 1970s and beyond.

Construction on the new WSU Schweitzer Engineering Hall broke ground in September 2023, and we are excited to be welcoming VCEA students through its doors this Fall 2026.

Led by Mackenzie Elrod, Interior Designer, ZGF; David Grant, Landscape Architect, ZGF; Sara Howell, Architect/Design Project Manager, ZGF; and Joshua Thompson, Builder/Project Manager, Lease Crutcher Lewis; this project serves as a model example of how all four disciplines here at the SDC work together in the professional world of design and construction.

The SDC Lecture Committee is privileged to invite you to "JSa: Micro-urbanisms," by Javier Sánchez

This lecture will focus on urban acupuncture and micro-urbanism as design paradigms. With an emphasis on the importance of localized interventions and community engagement, urban acupuncture promotes the idea that cities evolve through incremental improvements. Micro-urbanism recognizes the unique microcosms of small, interconnected spaces within the larger context of the city and postulates that these play a vital role in shaping the urban environment. Using a series of built projects from the past 3 decades, this presentation explains this approach to the design and planning process and how they are fundamentally tied to the public health, safety, and welfare of the community.

Hailing from a family of architects with a special interest in housing, Javier Sánchez completed his studies in architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Two years prior to graduating from Columbia University’s GSAPP in New York, Sánchez had launched JSa as a practice that used real estate development as an extension of architectural agency. A combination that allowed him to deploy small, strategic interventions as a means to regenerate the torn fabric of Mexico City’s central colonias, a perimeter he was familiar with from growing up in it. As Javier’s practice matured, his expertise in the rehabilitation of heritage structures and the refurbishment of existing buildings enabled new forms of dwelling, mixed programs, and spatial resilience. In recent years, he has expanded his focus toward regenerative design, foregrounding architecture’s role within broader ecological and infrastructural frameworks through innovative self-sustaining ecosystems that respond to pressing global and local environmental challenges. His contributions to architectural discourse have earned Javier wide acclaim, including inductions into the AIA’s College of Fellows and Mexico’s National Academy of Architecture (as an Emeritus Member); in 2014, Javier held a prestigious Lectureship at UNAM's School of Architecture.

The SDC Lecture Committee is privileged to invite you to "Promoting Sustainable Development through UNESCO's Programmes & Sites," a virtual lecture, by Jing Fang.

The project “Promoting sustainable development through UNESCO’s programmes and sites” aims to promote a more sustainable and climate neutral Europe by working through research and education with the goal of developing innovative solutions to environmental problems in selected UNESCO sites. The project will endorse the role of Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks and natural and mixed World Heritage sites to act as pilot sites for sustainable development and implement at the UN Sustainable Development Goals including on water, climate action, ocean and land.

Jing Fang works in Science unit as Associate Project Officer for the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe based in Venice, Italy. She joined in UNESCO since 2017. She has been working for the past 11 years, first with Ministries and then with university in China, and afterwards at UNESCO in the areas of sciences. At UNESCO she focused on her work on STEM, STI, climate change, biodiversity as well as UNESCO sites. She is coordinating two scientific projects of UNESCO notably in cooperation with private sector and playing a key role in the implementation of UNESCO scientific programmes and activities in the region, notably relating to STEM, STI, open science. She supports UNESCO’s involvement in the issue-based coalition on Environment and Climate Change for Europe and Central Asia, which UNESCO co-chairs along with UNEP and UNECE. She is also the Focal Point of Youth UNESCO Climate Action Network in this region. She has 2 masters degrees both in Environment and in Education.
