Join Cameron McGill and Colin Criss for a poetry-focused, faculty-led study abroad to Ireland in summer 2026!! Earn 3-credits (ENG 109, 358 or HON 380, 430) for our 2.5 week trip, where we will meet poets, attend readings, see the sights, keep a journal, and consider the landscape of Ireland and its history through the lens of the poem.

Lesley Hazleton wrote eloquent, deeply reported books about Islam, Israel, the Detroit automobile industry, and so many other things. She was also my professor at Penn State in the early 1990s. I owe her a great deal and will miss her irreverent voice.

Born in England and raised Jewish, she became agnostic, writing books about her own lack of faith, the prophet Muhammad and her time as a car columnist.

Join the WSU English Department, the Visiting Writer Series at Washington State University, the WSU Common Reading program, and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 16, for three events as part of WSU's 2nd annual National Day of Racial Healing:

10:30 am-12:00 pm: “Creative Writing & Mindfulness Workshop”
Explore the world of ekphrastic poetry with Cameron McGill, Colin Criss, and other creative writing faculty while engaging with current museum exhibitions. The session kicks off with a mindfulness experience led by Trymaine Gaither.

11:30am-1:30pm: “Drop-In Macrame Activity: Braiding Our Stories”
Engage in a short reflective activity is response to the common reading book “Braiding Sweetgrass”: Create a simple macrame key chain that symbolizes the strands of self you honor and value, while also building connections with others in the WSU community. All materials provided.

1:45-2:45 pm: "Writers Give Voice Reading and Open Mic"
Readers will include WSU Campus Civic Poets & finalists, creative writing students and faculty, and student editors of WSU creative writing publications. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to bring a poem to read during the open mic portion. This program takes place live in the museum’s Pavilion Gallery and will be livestreamed on the WSU Global Campus YouTube channel.
