The WSU Libraries - The Cougar Information & Resources Gateway Approximately 35,000 volumes are added to the collection annually.

The WSU Libraries have 2,159,693 book volumes; 30,000 periodical subscriptions; media, maps, microforms, government publications, electronic databases, manuscripts, archives, and special collections -- to support all of WSU's teaching and research programs. The collection is further extended by our participation in a consortium of 35 libraries in Washington and Oregon via Summit with access to ove

r 28 million items. The Libraries also offer access to the full text of over 25,800 digital resources, including current journals, books, documents, and databases in electronic format.

WSU Libraries will hold a reception and program at 3 p.m. Monday, August 17, in the Terrell Library atrium to celebrate two endowments established by Patti Hirahara of Anaheim, California, daughter and granddaughter of two men who documented daily life in the Heart Mountain incarceration camp in Wyoming for three years during World War II.

Patti Hirahara donated their over 2,000 images and other items to the libraries in 2010, forming the George and Frank C. Hirahara Photograph Collection, 1943-1945 (https://content.libraries.wsu.edu/digital/collection/hiraharag), considered the largest private collection of photos taken at Heart Mountain. The collection helped launch WSU as a nationwide resource on Japanese American incarceration in the United States, in large part because of Patti Hirahara’s determined efforts to promote it. WSU Libraries are seeking university students, faculty, and staff to take part in a usability study from July 20–Aug. 7 to help the libraries determine if two artificial intelligence (AI) tools should be incorporated into the Search It discovery website. June 19, or Juneteenth, marks the day in 1865 when freedom for enslaved Black people in Galveston Bay, Texas, was officially announced by Union troops, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. According to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, Juneteenth is recognized as the country’s second independence day, long celebrated in the African American community, yet largely unknown to most Americans. WSU Libraries celebrate the upcoming graduations of one of the largest contingents of student employees in their history: Some 20 undergraduates will walk during the university’s May 9 Commencement at Beasley Coliseum. Thanks to a $1.2 million gift from Fluke Corporation, engineering classrooms and labs across five campuses are being equipped with professional-grade tools for students to gain hands-on experience with as they build skills for their industries.

At WSU Pullman, the Owen Science and Engineering Library is offering several of these tools for student checkout, giving WSU Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture students the opportunity to use testing devices that may not be readily accessible to them otherwise.

Hear from Owen science, engineering, and mathematics librarian Chelsea Leachman about the capabilities of these tools and how they will elevate development and discovery for students.

“Pause,” a curated sensory experience combining live music and guided meditation will be offered this week at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, and at noon on Wednesday, May 6, in the Terrell Library atrium. A finals week and pre-WSU Commencement event cosponsored by the WSU Pullman School of Music and the WSU Honors College, “Pause” supports focus, reflection, and restoration in a busy schedule. Christiano Rodrigues, assistant professor of violin and viola in the School of Music, Karen Nguyen, concert pianist and educator, and Robin Bond, director of the Mindfulness-Based Emotional and Social Intelligence Program in the Honors College, are your guides to a place of calm amid chaos. All are welcome.

Ryan Booth, assistant professor in the WSU Department of History, is the 2026 recipient of the Library Excellence Award, which recognizes a non-library WSU faculty or staff member who has shown consistent support for the WSU Libraries. Booth will be presented with the award during an in-person event at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the Terrell Library atrium. The presentation is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Come to Holland Library’s Dimensions Lab in Room 120 on Thursday, April 23, to learn two of the more popular DAWs (digital audio workstations) in electronic music production: FL Studio (4-5 p.m.) and Ableton Live (5-6 p.m.). These back-to-back workshops taught by WSU Digital Audio Collective (DAC) members will include such topics as general operation and workflow, recording sound in, MIDI (musical instrument digital interface), routing/hardware, and automation. The workshops are free and open to the WSU community. Bring your own computer; for those who don’t have the software, downloading the demos to follow along is recommended.
