Washington State University Libraries Pullman The WSU Libraries - The Cougar Information & Resources Gateway Approximately 35,000 volumes are added to the collection annually.

The WSU Libraries have 2,159,693 book volumes; 30,000 periodical subscriptions; media, maps, microforms, government publications, electronic databases, manuscripts, archives, and special collections -- to support all of WSU's teaching and research programs. The collection is further extended by our participation in a consortium of 35 libraries in Washington and Oregon via Summit with access to over 28 million items. The Libraries also offer access to the full text of over 25,800 digital resources, including current journals, books, documents, and databases in electronic format.

The event, held in Terrell Library by the reference area, is cosponsored by the WSU Libraries and the WSU Academic Success and Career Center, which offers academic advising and coaching, career advice and exploration, and internship search assistance, as well as by-appointment tutoring at the Cougar Commons. A Cougar Commons time-management skills workshop planned with WSU First-Year Programs is set from 4–5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to help students develop strategies to make their academic experience a success, such as creating a daily plan, prioritizing tasks, establishing time limits, managing distractions, and more. Other upcoming events at the Cougar Commons include a Résumé Café from 1–3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, where students can receive one-on-one networking and résumé support from company representatives; and a session on time-management tips and the writing process from 3:10–4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, in partnership with the Undergraduate Writing Center. WSU Libraries’ Cougar Commons is the academic support center for university students in Terrell Library’s first floor near the reference area.

The MASC will open an exhibit Friday, Sept. 25, on one of its newest collections, rare mountaineering books donated in June 2025 by WSU alums and renowned mountain climbers John Roskelley and Chris Kopczynski. Both men will discuss the collection and mountaineering, their WSU connection, and more at a reception and open program from 5–7 p.m. in the MASC lobby of the ground-floor Terrell Library atrium. They will also sign copies of their own books. Titled “Peak to Page: Exploring the World of Mountaineering through Rare Books,” the exhibit will feature several of the collection’s 350 important works on mountaineering published between 1892 and 2012. MASC will also showcase newsletters from WSU’s Alpine Club, a student rock-climbing organization, from the 1970s. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, WSU Libraries will unveil a new mural painted by Jiemei Lin of the WSU Department of Art and inspired by the Gallup Collection of rare fishing books housed in The MASC. The unveiling takes place at 3 p.m. in the Quiet Study Lounge on Terrell Library’s first floor. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Titled “Living Archive,” the mural celebrates the rivers, forests, wildlife, and stories that shape the Inland Northwest. It weaves together historical illustrations, native plants and animals, fishing flies, and moments from the region’s outdoor heritage. Hidden throughout the composition are small references to books and objects from the Gallup Collection, inviting viewers to discover something new each time they look. Government information librarian Lorena O’English will hold a group reading of the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence on Constitution and Citizenship Day 2026, marking the 239th anniversary of the Constitution’s signing and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration’s adoption. The reading takes place at noon on Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Terrell Library ground-floor atrium. Copies of the Constitution and Declaration will be available for the event, which is free and open to the public. WSU English literature graduate student Cecil Decker will hold an Underground Comix Showcase from noon–2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Terrell Library’s ground-floor Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections reading room to give a short talk and share selected works from the Joseph M. Shea Comix and Small Press Collection, 1962-2010. Decker spent a month this past summer working with the collection that was part of a movement starting in the 1960s to preserve creative freedom from efforts to censor the content of comics. Independent historian Holly Miowak Guise (Iñupiaq) will discuss the complicated history of Alaska Natives during World War II at noon Monday, September 14, in the Holland Library lobby as the 2026 Sherman and Mabel Smith Pettyjohn Memorial History Lecture speaker. Guise’s lecture, “Alaska Native Resilience: Voices from World War II,” is free and open to the public and sponsored by the WSU Department of History in partnership with WSU Libraries. Owen Science and Engineering Library will hold a first-floor watch party of this year’s Ig Nobel Prizes ceremony from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. Free and open to the public, the Owen event includes pizza, trivia on the theme of fungi, and paper airplane-making. The annual awards ceremony started in 1991, with prizes named after Ignatius “Ig” Nobel, a distant (fictitious) cousin of Nobel Prize founder Alfred. The name is also a pun on the word “ignoble,” meaning of low birth or common origin. Prize winners are recognized by actual Nobel laureates for scientific contributions that make people laugh, then think, according to the company that sponsors the ceremony, Improbable Research.

WSU Libraries will hold a reception and program at 3 p.m. Monday, August 17, in the Terrell Library atrium to celebrate two endowments established by Patti Hirahara of Anaheim, California, daughter and granddaughter of two men who documented daily life in the Heart Mountain incarceration camp in Wyoming for three years during World War II.

Patti Hirahara donated their over 2,000 images and other items to the libraries in 2010, forming the George and Frank C. Hirahara Photograph Collection, 1943-1945 (https://content.libraries.wsu.edu/digital/collection/hiraharag), considered the largest private collection of photos taken at Heart Mountain. The collection helped launch WSU as a nationwide resource on Japanese American incarceration in the United States, in large part because of Patti Hirahara’s determined efforts to promote it.
