Undergrad researchers like Gitano represent students going above and beyond, seizing opportunities to gain skills in their training

After completing his undergraduate degree, Gitano Hobson plans on attending graduate school. Gitano is a biochemistry major and an EschLEAD scholar currently working in Dr. Ryan Driskell’s Fibroblast and Skin Regeneration Laboratory in the School of Molecular Biosciences.

The EschLEAD (Learn, Experience, Apply, Deliver) program is pioneering initiative — open to WSU undergraduate students from all backgrounds, experiences, and academic disciplines — designed to provide undergraduates with immersive, hands-on learning in real-world research environments in the college’s leading labs. EschLEAD combines skill-building, real-world applications, and mentorship to empower students to explore, grow, and create their own paths to success.

Amazing Driskell lab story

In case you missed it: Imagine going for your annual wellness checkup, and instead of a blood draw, the nurse simply plucks a few strands of hair.

Through a computer analysis of those strands, maybe even within the short timeframe of your visit, the medical team is able to determine the presence of health anomalies that might require intervention. Researchers at have developed a new method of hair analysis that could lend itself to applications like that in the future.

Way2go Chasity! Studying immunity to viral pathogens in Dr Goodman’s lab, Chasity moves on to the WSU-wide competition.

🎉🔬Congratulations Chasity Trammell, PhD candidate in the School of Molecular Biosciences! Chasity won ’s Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) last Friday and will represent the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine at the university level. Her research looks to help us understand how infected hosts, from mosquitoes to humans, respond to viruses like and , and determine how these responses can be targeted to reduce transmission and disease. Shout out to our second-place winner, Nadia McLean, third-place winner Shannon Allen Whiles, and all of those who participated in this year’s Three-Minute Thesis.
