Creative Writing at Washington State University is for students interested in writing poetry, fiction, nonfiction and working in the writing industry.

Creative Writing at Washington State University is for students interested in creative writing in various forms (poetry, fiction, nonfiction prose), in editing and publishing, and in careers drawing on related creative and professional skills. The overall program involves three areas: First, the classroom course of study; Second, the campus literary magazine LANDESCAPES, which is entirely run by u

ndergraduate students; and Third, the Visiting Writers' Series, which students help manage. The curriculum involves a three-tiered program of writing workshops, culminating in two senior workshop seminars where students work on a final project in the creative writing genre of their choice. Creative writing majors also take a series of literature courses alongside the writing workshops. Students have the option of writing for LANDESCAPES and/or working on the editorial, marketing, and business teams that put out the magazine once a year. Students also work on the logistics and marketing of the Visiting Writers' Series, which has brought to campus such writers as Robert Olen Butler, Judy Blunt, Hoa Nguyen, Kim Barnes, Rick Barot, Benjamin Percy, Katrina Roberts, Ed Dorn, Anne Waldman, Robert Wrigley, Galway Kinnell, and many others.

I've been listening to a good podcast called Question Everything, produced by Brian Reed, who created S-Town (one of my all time faves). His new podcast concerns itself with the current state of journalism. In one episode I learned about (and started reading) Tangle Newsletter, which provides summaries from the left and right viewpoints on particular major topics, then offers it's own "take." Tangle attempts to be unbiased, and it's refreshing. Check it out here (it's free):

Lesley Hazleton wrote eloquent, deeply reported books about Islam, Israel, the Detroit automobile industry, and so many other things. She was also my professor at Penn State in the early 1990s. I owe her a great deal and will miss her irreverent voice.

Born in England and raised Jewish, she became agnostic, writing books about her own lack of faith, the prophet Muhammad and her time as a car columnist.
