Even if you don’t think your family qualifies for free or reduced-price school meals, you might be surprised to learn that you do under ALICE guidelines!

What is ALICE? ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. It describes hardworking families who earn too much to qualify for traditional assistance, yet still struggle to stretch a paycheck in Hawaiʻi’s high cost-of-living environment.

The Hawaii Department of Education is making free and cheaper school meals available to many more families. If your household earns up to three times the federal poverty limit, your children may now qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school!

What this means for example, is that last year the income threshold for a family of 4 to qualify for reduced meal prices was $70,208. This year that income threshold for a family of 4 to qualify is $113,850!!! A difference of $43,642! YOU MIGHT QUALIFY for reduced meal prices!
