Students in Mr. Cohen’s science class are getting hands-on with ecosystems by creating their own food webs!

This week, students explored how plants, animals, and other organisms are connected through the transfer of energy—and how those relationships can look different depending on where you are in the world.

From forests and grasslands to oceans and other unique environments, students are seeing firsthand how every organism plays an important role in its ecosystem.

It’s a perfect example of the “S” in STREAM—Science—using curiosity, observation, and critical thinking to understand the world around us!

Last night was a great evening of connection, collaboration, and creativity as students and families kicked off the new school year together at our Back To School Night.

Parents and students had the opportunity to meet and connect with teachers, learn more about what makes Risley unique—including our STREAM and Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach—and get a glimpse into the exciting learning experiences ahead.

Students were even able to have their own shirts made!

👾On our first day back yesterday, students in Ms. Martinez’s Computer Science class discussed what the year is going to look like for them. Robotics, learning to code, getting familiar with A.I., computational thinking, collaboration and communication will all be emphasized throughout the year.

They will have opportunities to design, build, test, and improve their own digital projects. This class can give students an early look at pathways involving software, engineering, technology, cybersecurity, data, and other careers in this field.

🏠For a team building exercise to start of the year, these students were challenged to create a house of cards that is two stories high, with a door on the first floor and a roof in a specific amount of time. It was a great way for us to start off collaborating and communicating effective to achieve our goal!

A new school year is just around the corner, and Risley School of Exploration (WEB) leaders were ready to welcome the newest members of the school community. Incoming sixth graders spent the day getting to know one another and teachers, exploring the building and taking part in activities designed to build connections before classes begin Tuesday.

Through the Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) program, eighth graders step into leadership roles as mentors and positive role models for new students. The goal is to help sixth graders feel confident, connected and right at home as they start their middle school experience.
