ARE GUNS REALLY THE #1 KILLER OF AMERICAN CHILDREN?

You may have seen signs or social-media posts saying:

“Guns are the #1 killer of American children.”

There is real data behind that statement. But there is also some important context that usually gets left out.

According to 2023 CDC mortality data, there were 2,566 fi***rm deaths among Americans ages 1–17.

Here is where those deaths occurred by age:

• Ages 1–4: 118
• Ages 5–9: 116
• Ages 10–14: 530
• Ages 15–17: 1,802

That means approximately 70% of all fi***rm deaths in the 1–17 group occurred among 15-, 16- and 17-year-olds.

Put another way:

There were 764 fi***rm deaths among ages 1–14, compared with 1,802 among ages 15–17 alone.

That distinction matters.

There is another important part of the statistic that often isn't explained.

“Fi***rm deaths” does not mean “children accidentally killed with guns.”

The fi***rm number combines several very different circumstances, including:

• Homicide
• Su***de
• Unintentional shootings
• Undetermined and other fi***rm deaths

Homicide and su***de account for most fi***rm deaths among young people. Accidental shootings are a much smaller portion of the total.

None of this means fi***rm deaths involving children aren't a serious problem. They are.

Safe fi***rm storage is especially important. CDC research on unintentional fi***rm deaths involving children found that fi***rms involved were frequently stored loaded and unlocked. Responsible gun owners should take that seriously.

But we should also be careful about what statistics actually tell us.

When someone says “guns are the #1 killer of American children,” ask three questions:

What ages are being counted?
What kinds of fi***rm deaths are included?
How are those deaths distributed by age?

Once you look at the underlying numbers, you get a much clearer picture.

The fi***rm-death problem among America's youth is real, but it is heavily concentrated among older teenagers and involves homicide and su***de far more than accidental shootings involving young children.

Good decisions start with good information.

This Week in Colorado: A handful of Colorado laws are set to go into effect starting in July. House Bill 25-1133, “Requirements for Sale of Fi****ms Ammunition,” tightens the laws around am******on sold at retail stores. Starting July 1, this law requires am******on sold at retail stores to be accessible only with the assistance of a vendor. It also prohibits anyone under 21 from buying am******on at a retail store, with exceptions like those who are 18 to 20 years old and are members of the military or have a hunter education certification. The act also requires retailers that ship am******on to use a delivery service that verifies the person is 21 years old. Violating this law is a civil infraction, and second or subsequent violations are a class 1 misdemeanor.

This morning, the Supreme Court handed down Wolford v. Lopez, striking down Hawaii’s “Vampire Rule” in a 6-3 decision and reversing the Ninth Circuit. SAF filed an amicus brief in support of the gun owners in that case.

A fi***rms group has filed a lawsuit challenging a recently signed law expanding regulations for fi***rms dealers in Colorado. House Bill 26-1126 clarifies that fi***rms dealers must hold both a federal and state license to operate. The bill also allows the Department of Revenue to fine dealers up to $100,000 for second or subsequent violations of certain requirements. Additionally, HB 1126 expands record-keeping requirements to apply to all fi***rm purchases, rather than just pistols and revolvers. It includes certain requirements for gun shops, such as that dealers must safely store large-capacity magazines, have certain security features on all doors and windows and be equipped with an alarm system that includes video surveillance of every door and area where fi***rms are kept. Rep. Steven Woodrow, D-Denver, who sponsored the bill, said it builds on the state’s permit-to-sell policy to prevent fi***rm theft and protect Coloradans from gun violence. The Colorado State Shooting Association, the state’s branch of the National R***e Association, has notified Gov. Jared Polis that it would pursue legal action if he signed the bill into law. “This law authorizes government agents to access sensitive fi***rm ownership records without a warrant, without probable cause, and without any requirement to justify the search,” said Ray Elliott, the group’s president. “The Constitution does not permit the government to treat every law-abiding fi***rm owner as a suspect. We believe HB26-1126 violates fundamental protections guaranteed by both the Second and Fourth Amendments, and we are prepared to see this fight through.” The lawsuit contends that HB 1126’s provision granting law enforcement access to fi***rm purchase records without requiring a warrant or probable cause violates the Constitution and “establishes a system of government surveillance directed at lawful fi***rm owners.” “Colorado’s leaders continue to pass laws that burden the rights of responsible citizens while failing to address the criminals who actually commit violent offenses,” said CSSA’s executive director, Huey Laugesen. “When elected officials disregard constitutional limits on government power, it becomes necessary to defend those rights in court. That is exactly what we are doing.” The organization has previously filed lawsuits against the state’s fi***rm excise tax and a measure requiring individuals to undergo safety training to be eligible to purchase semiautomatic weapons. Both suits are pending.
