Congratulations to CSU Pueblo alumna Jo McGuire, recipient of a CSU Pueblo Distinguished Alumni Award!
Jo’s journey is a wonderful example of how curiosity and education can grow into meaningful professional achievement and leadership. As a CSU Pueblo student, Jo pursued degrees in Sociology and Cannabis Studies, with a focus on the challenges surrounding cannabis impairment detection and workplace drug policy. Her work grew from an Advanced Cannabis Studies project into independent research and a capstone project focused on emerging technologies in workplace impairment testing, which she presented at the 2023 Cannabis Research Conference in Denver.
Today, Jo is a nationally recognized expert in workplace drug and alcohol policy and testing. She serves as Executive Director and Chair of the Board of the National Drug and Alcohol Screening Association (NDASA) and is President and CEO of Jo McGuire, Inc. and Five Minutes of Courage. Her work helps employers, policymakers, and professionals navigate the increasingly complex questions surrounding cannabis legalization, workplace safety, impairment, and drug testing.
Jo has also continued to give back to CSU Pueblo, returning to share her expertise with Cannabis Studies students and collaborating with Dr. Aaron Johnson, Cannabis Studies Coordinator, whose courses and mentorship helped support the development of her early research.
The Department of Sociology, Criminology & Anthropology is proud to celebrate Jo and this well-deserved recognition. Congratulations, Jo!
