Chemistry can be a good and bad thing. Chemistry is good when you make love with it. Chemistry is bad when you make crack with it.

Today is the 6th Annual Give Day at CSU Pueblo. Unfortunately, we did not get any of the Chemistry Department Scholarship funds into the campaign this year. However, you can still make a donation today or any other day to support the Chemistry funds. Please consider making a donation through CSU Pueblo Foundation's regular donation page https://www.csupueblo.edu/foundation/drive-campaign-donation-form.html. Simply select "Other" when designating the fund that you wish your donation to be applied to and type in the name of the fund you want to support. You might consider: the "Chemistry Club Scholarship Fund", the "Dr. Sandra Bonetti Chemistry Scholarship", the "Dr. Mel Druelinger Chemistry Scholarship", or the "Cannabis Biology and Chemistry Student Scholarship and Research Fund".

CSU-Pueblo Give Day! is November 15, 2019. The Chemistry Club at CSU-Pueblo has an active fundraising campaign to support the Chemistry Club Scholarship Fund (http://c-fund.us/nmb). This fund is used to support travel expenses, lodging, meals, and registration for students to present the results of their research activities at regional or national ACS meetings or comparable venues of other scientific societies. In 2018, the Chemistry Club Scholarship Fund provided support to six students to travel to Orlando, Florida, to attend and present at the spring National ACS Meeting.

Your support of this fund benefits both chemistry and biology majors in professional development as they interact with peers and mentors from other institutions at their selected meetings. These young scientists at CSU-Pueblo greatly appreciate your support (http://c-fund.us/nmb). Thank you!

Happy National Chemistry Week! As NCW wraps up the Chemistry Department wanted to share some photos form our annual Chemistry Day Celebration, which was held yesterday (10/25/18). The Department hosted 80 high school students from 4 regional schools. The Faculty and Chem Club Students engaged the participating students in a variety of activities celebrating the NCW theme "Chemistry is out of this World".

Recently the students in my Environmental Chemistry class were given an assignment that required that they present some information to the whole class. Leading up to the day that the students would be presenting I received an inquiry from a student about how best to make the presentation. In my response I offered a list of options, such as PowerPoint, info on the whiteboards, lead an interactive discussion, etc. To be a bit tongue-in-cheek I include using a haiku to convey information as one of the options. So sure enough this student, Phil Hopkins, included a haiku with each presentation. Phil has given me his permission to share his poetic chemistry skills:

Carbon Sequestration by Enhanced Primary Productivity in the Ocean

Iron in the seas
Makes more photosynthesis
More NOx and Methane

Geothermal Energy

Heat from the deep earth
Power plants and home heating
Contamination

Thank you to all the generous donors that have supported Chemistry Students by donating to the Chemistry Club Scholarship Fund. In my previous post I neglected to mention that the CSU-Pueblo Foundation is matching dollar for dollar the first $1000 raised during CSU-Pueblo Give Day (today - Sept 27th). As of right now $890 have been donated. If you have been thinking about making a donation, but have not yet, now is the time to do so and help us maximize the matching dollars that the Chemistry Club Scholarship Fund receives. Donate @

Yesterday the Chemistry Department hosted its annual Earth Day Celebration (a bit belated this year). We had about 70 students and teachers from local middle schools on campus for a series of activities centered around the ACS adopted theme for Earth Week of "Dive into Marine Chemistry". I think fun was had by all involved.
