πŸ’™πŸ’š **Help Us Stock the Nettie S. Freed Care Closet!** πŸ’šπŸ’™

Sometimes a student needs more than a pencil or a notebook to be ready to learn.

Our **Nettie S. Freed Care Closet** provides students and families with things they need β€” completely free and without judgment.

It might be:
πŸ₯« Extra food to help a family get through a long weekend or school break
🍎 A snack for a student who is hungry
🧦 A new pair of socks for a child who can’t focus because the hole in their sock is bothering them
πŸͺ₯ A toothbrush, deodorant, brush, or other hygiene item that helps a student feel clean and confident at school
πŸ‘– Fresh underwear and pants for a student who has an accident
πŸ’• Underwear and period products for a young girl who starts her period unexpectedly and isn’t prepared

These may seem like small things, but to our kids, they can be **really big things**.

The Care Closet helps us remove barriers, protect students’ dignity, and most importantly, **keep kids in school, comfortable, confident, and ready to learn.**

Last year was an especially difficult year for many of our families, particularly when it came to food insecurity. Because of the generosity of our amazing community, we were able to provide extra food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other essentials whenever they were needed.

And we want to be able to continue saying **YES** when a student or family needs help. πŸ’š

Our Care Closet is stocked entirely through donations, primarily from our **Amazon Wish List**. Items can be purchased directly from the list and sent to our school. We can also accept **Amazon gift cards** for anyone who would like to contribute but doesn’t have an Amazon account.

Every donation β€” big or small β€” goes directly toward caring for our Nettie S. Freed students and families.

Thank you for helping us take care of our Yetis. πŸ’™πŸ’š

**Because when kids’ basic needs are met, they can focus on what they came to school to do: learn, grow, and thrive.**

Yesterday’s Back to School Bash was a smashing success β€” and a great reminder that the first day of school is right around the corner!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 18, as we kick off an exciting new school year. Every student in attendance on the first day will be entered into a drawing for some fabulous prizes!

Remember: Beginning this year, all personal electronic devices β€” including phones, smartwatches, headphones, and gaming devices β€” must be turned off and put away during the school day. By unplugging from our devices, we can embrace the analog experience: meaningful, face-to-face connections that boost focus, strengthen communication, and build real-world skills.

Let’s make this the best year yet by being Present, Powerful and Empowered by Reading!

Our first Passages ceremony saw 65 members of the Class of 2030 recognized for completing their middle school journey.

As part of the completion process, the eighth graders presented a "Legacy Portfolio" project that detailed their learning journey at Freed and research into a pressing issue: all part of the Expeditionary Learning model.

The 6th grade Decimal Diner brought math to life with through a Texas Roadhouse-themed activity. Students used menus to calculate the cost of different meal combinations and worked within a budget to "purchase" a meal, practicing decimal operations, money management, and real-world problem-solving skills in an engaging and meaningful way.

Texas Roadhouse donated menus, rolls, and meal coupons.
