We were taught that the best thing we could do as a society is support the development of strong nuclear families, with 2 parents and 1.5 children living in a nice quiet home with a well-kept yard and a white picket fence. But we know from studying anthropology, psychology, and sociology that we are by our very nature social creatures. Millions of years of evolution have created human beings with the innate sense of community. We have a need to belong. Our individualistic society tells us to resist that need, and it atomizes us apart from one another. Real healing for our world happens when we recognize our kinship with one another.

One of my favorite parts of growing up in a Latinx family was the love and support that I felt from all my extended family. Family birthday celebrations every month of the year, park days with all the primos and primas, knowing that if my single mom ever needed a place to stay until she could get on her feet we always had a tío/tía with a room for us… It was the love and support from my family that taught me very early on how important community really is.

When we work in community with our family, friends, and neighbors, that’s when we will truly create something beautiful.
