Today, we remember that tragic day 25 years ago. We honor those who were lost, the survivors, the first responders, and all those who acted selflessly for the good of others.
To commemorate 9/11, TAC Lewis led a morning walk of honor covering over 2.5 miles, a distance representing the flights of stairs firefighters climbed as they worked to rescue people from the Twin Towers.
As a firefighter of 28 years and current Fire Chief of the Zena Volunteer Fire Department, TAC Lewis completed the walk in his full gear. Staff members and cadets from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th platoons participated, pausing for a moment of silence at the time the second tower was struck.
“It helps set the tone for the cadets. They weren’t born when this happened, so maybe it will inspire them to go look at the history and learn what 9/11 is now,” Lewis said.
After the walk, TAC Lewis shared more about his experience as a firefighter and what 9/11 means to our nation and the first responder community.
“We’ll never forget. We’ll keep moving forward no matter the struggles we come by. It’s going to hurt us, but we know how to pick it up and move on, and just continue to the next fight… the mission will never stop.”
