Across Utah Lake, BYU students use the 36-inch telescope at the West Mountain Observatory to peer deep into the universe, capturing galaxies, nebulae and other objects millions of light-years away.

But for these students, astronomy is about more than math and physics. It’s about standing beneath a dark sky, seeing something they’ve studied for years with their own eyes, and experiencing the wonder of God's creations in a special way.

"All it takes is just a few frames on a camera and we can see things that God has intended just for us to see. Studying physics and astronomy really strengthens my testimony of the existence of a God."

Have you been to one of the amazing Cougs Care service tailgates yet? This is your year!

For the first time, Cougs Care will include a home event in association with First Down Provo, a free community celebration on Friday, September 11 from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Old Courthouse County Grounds in downtown Provo. Fans attending the event are invited to donate canned food items benefiting Community Action Services and Food Bank, helping support local families facing food insecurity.

For fans attending BYU road games, this season’s projects include literacy drives, a food drive and a sports equipment drive benefiting organizations in Colorado, Texas, Florida, Kansas and Utah.

As part of BYU Education Week, Elder Patrick Kearon, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, addressed the campus community with a message centered on the importance of slowing down and finding peace in Jesus Christ.

His message was split into three parts: the danger of always being in a hurry, the Savior’s example of rest and receiving Christ’s peace, even now.

“If I have a wish for you, it is that you find peace in your actual life — not the life you think you would have if you were able to finish your to-do list, have three extra hours in a day, and finally achieve your goals. My wish is that you and I might slow down and turn more easily and comfortingly to Christ, and bask in His promised peace."

Marriage is a walk in the park....

A new study from researchers at BYU suggests that exercise may strengthen marriages, especially when couples exercise together.

The study, recently published in Family Relations, found that couples who participated in shared physical activity—particularly walking together—reported better communication, stronger conflict resolution and lower levels of marital conflict than couples who did not exercise together.

In an effort to encourage competitive skills in a complex labor market, a group of MBA students and professors from the BYU Marriott School of Business recently spent two weeks in Ghana, consulting with businesses and working with Ghanaian BYU-Pathway students through three workshops: creating solid resumes, preparing for job interviews and developing professional networking skills.

The volunteers hosted six events across 15 stakes of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reaching more than 500 participants. In addition, they trained 132 Ghanaian volunteers who are now equipped to share these career-building skills with family members and friends.

For MBA student and Ghana native Emmanuel Obbah, the experience was an opportunity to help others become more confident in becoming self-reliant and being strong disciples of Jesus Christ.

“We try to help everyone that we receive,” Obbah said. “It has really been joyful to be part of this program and to help in my own country.”

When people hear about bird strikes, they usually think of airplane emergencies and grounded flights. While the danger that birds pose to planes and passengers is real, the sheer volume of these collisions goes largely unnoticed and drives a hidden toll on bird populations.

BYU students are monitoring the bird populations in and around the Provo River Delta and Provo airport to understand how management of habitat can help reduce collision risk.

Since 2017, students have been traveling to the river mouth where it flows into Utah Lake three times a week to survey the populations. Trained in their ornithology class on campus, these excursions give students a chance to gain real-world experience analyzing and caring for the wildlife in their community.

“Coming to the delta to enjoy the sights and sounds and enjoy God’s creation helps you have a deeper gratitude for it, and helps you want to protect it,” said wildlife conservation student Julyn Robinson, who just graduated earlier this year.

NOTE: All birds were captured and handled by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources with appropriate permits.

Nearly 250 years after printers rushed the Declaration of Independence into existence, BYU adjunct professor Robert Buchert is retracing history one letter, one sheet and one impression at a time.

Known today as the Dunlap Broadside, this first official printing of the Declaration became the urgent, tangible announcement that the colonies had chosen to become a new nation.

Buchert, who has taught BYU’s Intro to Letterpress class for more than two decades, set out to recreate it. The result is a painstaking replica that mirrors not only the Declaration's words but also the paper, typography and printing imperfections of the original. Buchert's re-creation required more than 1,300 hours of research, design, and hand craftsmanship.

Trained to find survivors during earthquakes, APOPO's HeroRATs got a boost from BYU engineering students who helped design localization trackers that can be worn by rats who assist in search and rescue efforts.

With incredible intelligence and a sense of smell that make them ideal collaborators, East African Savanna pouched rats are being trained by the humanitarian organization APOPO to identify landmines, to detect tuberculosis, and now to help find earthquake victims in the rubble of buildings.

After meeting the rats, the students spent weeks developing a system that integrated visual odometry, an inertial measurement unit and machine learning into a Raspberry Pi computer small enough for a rat to carry. The system stores valuable data that the rat is trained to bring back to the rescue team.
