Dr. Ulrike Mitchell, an anatomy professor at BYU, traveled to Melbourne, Australia, to collaborate with her research team at Monash University. The team received a grant to investigate whether running could be an effective treatment for chronic low back pain. They collected and analyzed data on pain levels, disability, vertebrae health, intervertebral disc health, and core muscle size at the beginning, midpoint, and end of a 12-week study. The results showed that the 12-week progressive running program reduced pain and improved disability. The impact of running on bones, discs, and muscles is still being studied, with findings to be published soon.

Brooklyn Hopkins is majoring in Exercise Sciences where she is currently doing an internship at Boston Children’s Hospital working in the Orthopedic department. Her research focuses on the role of chondrocytes (cells responsible for cartilage formation) in bone development in children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta - or brittle bone disease. She gets to study chondrocytes and what it is that encourages them to develop into working osteoblasts (cells that build bone). She says, "I’ve only been here a few weeks, but already learned so much!" BYU Life Sciences

Shelly Parcell is a Zumba instructor here at BYU! Here are some of her thoughts:
"I’ve been teaching fitness for 10 years. I have taught Zumba at BYU since 2011 and STRONG by Zumba since 2017. Next semester I’m only teaching STRONG but I’ll be back with Zumba next fall.
STRONG is a HIT workout that is synchronized to music. It’s been very popular at BYU. Students start to notice themselves really getting stronger in a matter of weeks.
I first found Zumba when my emotions were low. It helped me so much to have such an energetic atmosphere to look forward to! When I teach, I want to address the emotional well-being of each person because I know first-hand what a difference positive energy during exercise makes. Group exercise can be just the edge you need to make it through less pleasant parts of your day. Getting your heart racing and smiling at the same time teaches you that not all stress is bad, and you can do it! It’s so empowering!
I love the atmosphere at BYU. The students really are working hard and I try to boost them up before they conquer the rest of their day. Many of them are away from home, so our group classes can serve as a home-base for them in a low-stress environment. There is no homework! We are all just there to be positive and motivating."
