How private is student data when kids use educational apps?✏️🍎

BYU Marriott information systems faculty Mark Keith and Justin Giboney, alongside three BYU students, investigated the 100 most-used educational apps in Utah schools, and what they found was concerning.

Their research found that 52% of the apps collected student data, while 36% of apps with privacy agreements shared data with advertisers, often using unique identifiers for digital profiling.

Their findings helped contribute to new Utah legislation strengthening student data privacy protections. Now, the research team hopes this work will spark a broader conversation about how states can better protect students in an increasingly digital classroom.

Two weeks. Six events. A lasting impact on Ghana's next generation of leaders.

This summer, BYU Marriott MBA students partnered with BYU–Pathway to run workshops on resumes, interview prep, and networking skills for a workforce navigating a tough labor market.

Their work reached 500+ participants across 15 stakes, and 132 local volunteers now trained to keep passing these skills forward —building confidence and opportunity for aspiring business leaders everywhere.

Sports betting apps aren't just competing for your attention; they're competing with your savings account. New research from BYU Marriott finance faculty Mark Johnson and Jason Kotter, published in the Journal of Financial Economics, shows that many people have begun to confuse gambling with investing. After analyzing 184,000 households, they found that after betting was legalized, households cut net brokerage investments by 20% — and the heaviest bettors cut theirs by more than half, with 20 cents of every dollar bet coming straight out of long-term savings.

Last month at the Utah Policy Pitch Competition, BYU Marriott strategy student Sophia Strong won 3rd place out of 115 participants who shared policy proposal ideas to inspire future work in local policy creation and public legislation.

Sophia's award-winning pitch tackled the payday loan cycle in Utah—a topic she says gave her purpose far beyond the competition itself:

“This project gave me a platform to represent the more than 120,000 Utahns who engage with the payday loan industry each year and the estimated 38,000 who are trapped in the payday loan cycle, according to a Utah legislative audit. These are real people, often facing their hardest moments, and they rarely have a voice in the rooms where policy gets made,” Sophia says

She adds, “I think there is little more Christlike than using your voice on behalf of those who can't use theirs, and simply caring enough to act. The Savior spent His ministry noticing the people others overlooked, and that's the kind of leader I want to be. Transforming the world doesn't always mean grand gestures. Sometimes it means digging into a hard problem in your own community, standing up in front of decision makers, and advocating for families you may never meet. That's what this experience taught me, and it's a stewardship I plan to carry for the rest of my life.”
