We examine education, family engagement & student learning across social/cultural contexts.
We post research updates, lab activities, opportunities & resources for K-12/college students related to RI and Japan/Asia, promoting opportunities. We aim to understand socialization and family engagement in children's education in diverse sociocultural and socioeconomic contexts. Our current research focuses on education, socialization, and family engagement in education in Japan and the U.S., including students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and growing up in immigrant families.

I was impressed that my student, Kayla, chose to complete her project even though she didn't have to. It's incredibly rewarding to see students use their talent and what they've learned to contribute to our community.
Community Engagement and Impact: Education Student Creates Handcrafted Doll Set to Celebrate Local AAPI Museum Anniversary Kayla Walford '26 donated a handcrafted mother-daughter doll set, rooted in her Chinese-Jamaican heritage, to the AAPI History Museum in celebration of its one-year anniversary.

RYSE is hiring experienced K–12 educators to support multilingual learners this summer!
As a Teacher Mentor at Camp RYSE, the educators will help lead trainings, support AmeriCorps members and counselors, co-teach, model strong instructional practices, adapt lessons, and guide student progress. This is a great opportunity for educators with classroom experience who enjoy mentoring others and making a meaningful impact.
