Be a pen-pal with a Rhode Island Nursing Home Resident

The residents at Highlands on the East Side Assisted Living Facility are looking for pen-pals! Due to COVID-19 precautions, the residents are unable to see family this holiday season, but they would love to hear from you! Please consider signing up for the School of Public Health x Highlands on the East Side Assisted Living Facility resident pen-pal program and send a little joy during this particularly challenging time. The details are as follows:

1. Sign up to be a pen-pal letter writer :https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CmMlrKaslG1-U74gG4s1vPRJ9rvysPETATnMAw6zesk/edit?usp=sharing

2. Write your letter, it can be any length! There is no particular prompt, but the residents would love to hear about you, if you're comfortable sharing! Introduce yourself, share your story and send them encouraging words. Feel free to get creative and draw or include pictures of pets or scenery. These letters will be randomly distributed to 36 residents so please address as "Dear Friend" and keep them gender neutral. Avoid discussing politics or religion. If you would like the option for your penpal to write you back, please include a return address in your letter.

3. To ensure that these letters are delivered to the residents by mid-December, we ask that you mail them no later than December 4th, 2020

Please mail your letter to:

Elizabeth Mellen

Program Coordinator for Student Engagement

Regards: Nursing Home Letter

Brown University School of Public Health

BoxG-S121-3, Providence, RI 02912

4. Mailing is strongly encouraged, however if you live in Providence and need to do a contactless pickup/drop off, please email the SPH-GSC at [email protected]

*After signing up for the pen-pal program and successfully sending/dropping off a letter to the SPH-GSC, you will be enrolled in a lottery where 3 individuals will be randomly chosen to each win prizes*

Donate to Project Weber/RENEW 04/30/2021

We are incredibly thankful for Annajane Yolken, Dennis Bailer, and Ashley Perry from Project Weber/RENEW for sharing their deep insights about activism and opportunities in Rhode Island at the intersection of policing and public health at the Graduate Student Council (GSC) sponsored event.

The GSC will match up to $500 in donations to Project Weber/RENEW, so we would encourage our members of the audience to consider donating to the phenomenal organization that our speakers represent. Donations can be submitted here: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=NAH73XH335BJA

Project Weber/RENEW is a peer-based organization that provides a full range of harm reduction, recovery, and basic needs services to men, women, and transgender members of our community. The direct services provided by Project Weber/RENEW include overdose prevention, harm reduction, HIV/Hep C prevention and testing, case management, basic needs, support groups, and access to health and recovery services. Your donation – no matter how small – along with the Graduate Student Council match of up to $500 will go a long way to improve the health and well-being of people belonging to really vulnerable groups in Rhode Island, so we hope that you will consider donating.

Together, all of us are helping CCChampions achieve its goal of sponsoring friendship moments for every single newly diagnosed kid with cancer in 2017.

All you need to do is click the link below and follow the instructions! CCChampions is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so all donations are tax-deductible.

Last day of the March Madness fundraiser!

The deadline to submit a bracket for the CCChampions March Madness fundraiser is 11am tomorrow morning, so today is your last full day to participate! You don't want to risk missing that deadline...

The School of Public Health has raised $650 so far this year! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. We've already sponsored two newly diagnosed children into the program! Help us reach $1000 to sponsor two more kids!

Everyone who donates will have the opportunity to compete in a March Madness bracket contest! There is a sub-pool for family and friends of SPH, as well as a larger pool of all donors this year. Spread the word!

CCChampions is a 501(c)3 nonprofit started by a Brown alum that builds special 6-month-long friendships between children with cancer and inspirational role models.

TODAY, please join Brown's School of Public Health's Graduate Student Council, as we volunteer with the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless for a “Point in Time Count”!

Specifically, today, Monday (Jan 25th) and Wednesday (Jan 27th), we will be working with the Coalition in order to help them get an accurate number of homeless people in the state, which is then given to the Department of Housing and Urban Development to tabulate national statistics!

If interested, here is some more information:

The training is today, Monday, January 25th, at 5pm at the Coalition (address: 1070 Main St. Pawtucket 02860). This meeting will likely only take 30 minutes, and if interested, please email [email protected], so that we can put your name down and arrange for transportation to get you there.

The “Point in Time Count” is then on Wednesday, January 27th, at 6pm at Burnside Park. The event ends at 9pm, but may be shorter depending on how many people are outside. Again, if interested, please email [email protected], so that we can put your name down and arrange transportation as well.

We hope you can join us, and if so, please email us back!
