Brown University's Writing Fellows Program. Peer learning across all disciplines. We love coffee dates, hate red pens, and worship Kabob and Curry.

The Writing Fellows Program is an interactive, collaborative, peer tutoring approach to teaching writing based on our stubborn belief that writing is, ultimately, a communicative process that is best accomplished in active dialogue with other people. Every semester, approximately eighty Writing Fellows work with students in over 25 classes across the curriculum, from English to political science t

The Writing Fellows' mission is to create a conversation around academic writing that is focused on student voice and revision processes rather than evaluation. Writing Fellows are trained peer readers who work with a group of students in a specific class each semester, providing one-on-one writing support across the curriculum. This is a paid position that also requires you to enroll in the course ENGL1190M (a Writing Fellows training course) if you are hired.

Apply now to join an incredible team of Fellows who are dedicated to supporting writers at Brown!

In honor of our new cohort, today let's meet one of our student leaders!

Meet Sara Shapiro '20, concentrating in Political Science, one of the Student Assistant Directors.

"What has been your fondest memory with the Writing Fellows program?"

"My fondest memory with the Writing Fellows program was the study break Elana and I organized during finals last fall semester. It was such a nice and needed break from all the academic stress of finals and I loved getting to know new Fellows over cider and board games in a chill environment. The event really reminded me of what I love about this community: everyone’s warmth, openness, and curiosity! It’s been such a joy to be part of this community during my time at Brown and while I’ll really miss it I’m so so excited about the program’s future.”

Thank you, Sara, for all the hard work you have put into making the Writing Fellows program what it is today. We'll miss you!

To celebrate our application deadline being EXTENDED to April 13th, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the "Meet a Fellow" series!

Meet Charlie Saperstein, a junior concentrating in History.

"Why did you decide to apply to be a Writing Fellow?"

"Applying to be a writing fellow was one of the best decisions I made at Brown. As a Writing Fellow, I have learned so much about writing and language, both through ENGL 1190M and through my experience fellowing other students’ work. I also have met some great new people! For anyone interested, I would HIGHLY recommend checking it out."

Feel free to direct any questions to [email protected], or message us here directly on Facebook!

**MEET A FELLOW** Marielle Burt ’19
Marielle has been a devoted fellow for three semesters now. “Hot take but I really loved fellowing Burden of Disease in public health. They write these super long papers (~20 pages) but people were so into their projects; I learned so much while fellowing!” Following in the spirit of knowledge, Marielle is taking her first science course this semester (Plants, Food, and People - another fellowed course)!

To write down her new-found thoughts, she holds her idea notebook near always. “I had classy black — yes, I’m a scholar — and then I thought we shouldn’t take ourselves quite as seriously. Your ideas are also gonna be more fun by extension.” Marielle now totes a neon yellow idea notebook, which she sometimes takes to the golden-molded reading room in the Providence Public on Empire St. “I’m a big scribbler and I don’t even think my notes are useful to me but I find it cathartic? Useful? Maybe? Just fun.”

At the time of these photos Marielle was off to bake bread for the first time, a scheme to have a little more fun. “It’s all part of the process: draft, dialogue, revise! It should be mix, knead, rise. You gotta let the ideas percolate.”

**MEET A FELLOW** Daven McQueen '19

This is Daven's 5th semester as a fellow! She has fellowed, in chronological order, the following courses:
1. Burden of Disease
2. Czech Animation
3. [nothing because she was abroad, hehe]
4. Health and Hispaniola
5. Global Black Radicalism
~~ a super-cool mix as super-cool as Daven!

Her favorite course to fellow was Health and Hispaniola, an FYS: "I like working with first-years a lot because I feel like they're so excited to grow 🌱 as writers. It's fun to work with them!" She also enjoys fellowing science courses: "I don't do science, so I learn a lot!"

Daven has a stuffed dog named Hugs that her parents gave her for Valentines' Day when she was, like, 9. ❤️
"I bring him everywhere, he's always in wherever I'm living."

Where does she live now? Dangerously close to PVDonuts... O_o
"I was just there this morning *laughs*. [When you asked me what my favorite place in PVD was], I was going to be like, 'India Point Park!' Then I was like, 'No... let's be honest here.'" :')

**MEET A FELLOW** Matt Dwelle '19

This is "technically" Matt's second semester as a fellow, "since [he] was abroad last spring." He is currently the head fellow for HISP0740 Intensive Survey of Spanish Literature, a course he has actually taken before! "It's cool to come full circle." :)

When asked about an object that is important to him, he had a bit of trouble coming up with something:
"I have a little Spanish flag bracelet that I wear sometimes... that I bought in... an alley... in Spain..." (*question mark* 🤔)

However, he eventually arrived at an answer:
"You know what I love? It's not an object, but this bracelet reminds me of my host family [in Spain]. I miss them so much. I really felt like I bonded with them. (Ooo pretend they gave the bracelet to me!)"

In the end, he actually *did* have an object that connects him to his host family:
"They gave me a Real Madrid shirt—the father used to play for Real Madrid. I recently found pink polka dots all over it, but I'm trying to wash it to get the stains out, and we're about halfway there!"

The morning before this interview, he went to Providence Power Yoga ($8 yoga at 8 am!)—"Sometimes I see Stacy there!"
"But I was working at Reslife just now and they had a Reslife Cookie Smackdown in which Reslife staff make their own cookies and you have to try them all and vote, so I had 8 types of cookies and I was *ill* by cookie 2, and I was like, there goes my workout from this morning... I still have some in this bag." (See picture below of Matt running away from his bagged cookies.) 🍪

Between fellowing *in Spanish*, dealing with *mysterious* pink polka dot stains, and running away from *too many* cookies, Matt is a busy bee who is "really into Google calendar" as an organization tool.

As he was leaving this interview, he turned back to say, "I'm putting in a reminder on my phone to send you a picture. 😎 Now I'm going to go make sugar skulls for the Hispanic Studies DUG—which I lead! :)"
