Jason Tristan Brown’23 is concentrating in “Black Speculative Arts & Afrofuturism.”
⭐️ What is your IC about?
Black Speculative Arts and Afrofuturism uses Creative Writing and Performance Acting as an artistic vessel for exploring the Black diaspora and Black culture in extraordinary situations, such as; alternate histories, futures, Earths and parallel dimensions. Afrofuturism is a Black liberation creative methodology in music, fashion, and visual media where the experience of the African diaspora intersects with twentieth-century performance, digital culture, creative writing, techno-culture (sciences and technologies), and philosophy.
⭐️ Why did you create this IC?
The purpose of Black Speculative Arts and Afrofuturism is to develop skills in dramatic writing, long prose, and performance acting, while also fostering knowledge of Black cultures.

Izzy Cox’23 is concentrating in “Human Rights & the Refugee Experience.”
⭐️ What is your IC about?
Human Rights & the Refugee Experience explores topics of international law, displacement, conflict settings, trauma and resilience, and social support networks. My concentration culminated in a research thesis about the systemic causes of burnout in the refugee resettlement field.
⭐️ Why did you create this IC?
After beginning to formally study Arabic for my Middle East Studies degree and taking Immigrants in US Schools with Professor Flores as my First Year Seminar, I tried to find a way to study refugees in particular. IAPA didn't offer enough of a focus for me to study what I wanted, and I realized that I wanted to focus on human rights during the IC application process.
Theories in Action (TiA) is an interdisciplinary conversation enabling Brown students to share and showcase their research, leadership activities, artistic productions, and other worthwhile endeavors. 🤩🎓 Since 2010, TiA has provided senior students opportunities to share their work with and beyond the Brown community through roundtable and poster sessions, resulting in a rich exchange of ideas and learning. This year, TiA is open to the broader student community for participation.
Why participate in TiA? The event allows students to reflect on and share meaningful experiences with their peers and a general audience in a supportive, relaxing, and festive atmosphere.
Theories in Action will be held between May 2 and May 4 in Petteruti Lounge & Leung Gallery in the Campus Center/Faunce. Tara Hislip '25 & Daniel Solomon '26 are this year's event coordinators, and TiA is co-sponsored by the Curricular Resource Center and the College.

If you or your friends have a great idea for a topic you want to explore in depth, and you want to earn course credit for doing so, then a (G)ISP 🌟 may be right for you! (Group) Independent Study Projects are a great opportunity to design and execute your own course, either independently or with a group of like-minded and curious students. One of the key components of the (G)ISP development process is writing the syllabus, and to help you work through it the CRC is collaborating with Dr. Christina Smith of the Sheridan Center to run a (G)ISP syllabus writing workshop! We hope that this event will help students strategize as to how to tackle the (G)ISP syllabus, and we're even offering free food! 😍
