Thank you to all who attended Dr. Paul Cato's lecture last night, "But Then You Read [In Black]" Black Liberal Arts & the Fight Against Racism at Providence College.
Thank you to Dr. Cato for sharing his experience and the experience of some of his Black students on PC campus. Finally, thank you to those in the audience who shared their questions and testimony to their own experiences on campus with the room.
Dear community,
In light of the increasingly degrading public comments about Latin Americans and Latinas/os—recently against the island of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican people—as a team of scholars and allies of these communities, we speak out, in solidarity with and for our sisters and brothers.
We denounce all dehumanizing comments—which are fueled by hate and bigotry. Such words are un-Christian, and considering this coming Sunday’s Gospel reading from Mark, “... to love your neighbor as yourself,” they are especially contrary to our deepest beliefs and our aspirations toward a Beloved Community.
We call on our campus community to join us, standing with and supporting our brothers and sisters—whether young or old, student, faculty, staff, or broader community, U.S. born or immigrant, citizen or non-citizen, documented or undocumented, refugees and longtime residents alike—many who are Catholic! We are one community, and we stand together against injustice to the inherent God given human dignity of all people!
