Thank you to everyone who attended our Trans Day of Remembrance Memorial and especially to those who shared their stories! Thank you for being in community with us as we took a moment of silence to honor the deceased, and for appreciating the exhibition we held for Trans Awareness Week. We were proud and grateful to feature RIC students, alumni, and community members from a wide range of ages - our youngest artist to submit was 13 years old; thank you for sharing your work! Now more than ever, it is critical to show trans youth they are loved and supported.
Thank you to everyone who attended our Truthsgiving last week. Special thanks to Learning 4 Life for hosting and Sly Fox Den for the catering! We had a great time playing games and sharing what we're thankful for!
In honor of national coming out day the students joined on the quad to show our pride and 'come out' of our Pride-themed door! With food, music, games, trivia, affirmations, and a raffle to win gift cards!
All proceeds for our raffle are going to Pride Alliance 😁♥️

Work will be displayed on campus in the Alex and Ani Hall first floor lobby from November 13th to November 19th for Trans Awareness Week. On Monday, November 20th, Trans Day of Remembrance, the Unity Center will host a Memorial Service, honoring transgender people who have lost their lives to transphobia. Artwork will be moved to the quad on for the Unity Center Memorial Service, unless the weather prohibits such.

Our work is only possible by our student workers and the dedication of our programming team. This month, the team was hard at work creating a closet door for our students to be able to "Come out" of for years to come.
Stay tune to see some of our campus "Coming out" on National Coming Out Day pictures.
Happy birthday Lee!

And were able to create hygiene bags that we are donating to RI Homelessness Vigil on October 19th. We were also excited to be joined by two RIC alumni who shared their stories.

To members of our RIC and Providence community,
We want to acknowledge and affirm the collective outpouring of grief in the many demonstrations we’ve seen and taken part in locally, nationally, and globally. As we honor the 25th anniversary of the Unity Center’s founding, we are reminded that the constant struggle to build a more just world is rooted not only in equity and inclusion, but in the practices of anti-racism: holding challenging conversations, imagining alternatives to our existing systems, and exposing the roots of white supremacy. Here in Providence, tens of thousands of people came together to support a youth-led movement to speak out against police violence and brutality, in likely the largest social justice march in Rhode Island history.
We want to honor the names of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, among the countless lives lost to state violence and acts of state-sponsored vigilante violence. As we enter Pride month, we also want to emphasize the intensified scrutiny and vulnerability faced by black, trans people, as illuminated by the recent brutal beating of Iyanna Dior, and the deaths of Tony McDade and Nina Pop. We are reminded that the movement to ensure that black lives matter must include black trans, q***r, and gender non-conforming lives.
As we navigate the COVID pandemic, we also want to acknowledge the disproportionate harm this disease has caused for our black and brown community members, and call forth the increased xenophobia and prejudice against Asian American people.
As an active step towards community engagement, the Unity Center will be offering reading/movie suggestions, and showcasing the efforts of community organizations, student groups, and on-campus centers to build support for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). While the past weeks and months have laid bare the righteous anger and sense of injustice felt by our most marginalized communities, we are also reminded of the recent words of freedom fighter Angela Davis as we confront centuries of racist violence: “‘This moment holds possibilities for change we have never before experienced.”
