It’s Official: Congratulations to Brown University’s Newest Ph.D. Graduates! 🎓🐻✨

The hoods have been placed, and a spectacular chapter has officially come to a close. Earlier today, Pembroke Field was filled with immense pride, joy, and well-earned celebration as Dean of the Graduate School David P. Lindstrom presided over the formal conferral of the largest cohort of Doctor of Philosophy degrees ever at Brown. From the historic University Procession to the final notes of the Alma Mater, it was an unforgettable morning honoring the pinnacle of academic achievement at Brown.

The ceremony also celebrated exceptional excellence, featuring a moving student address by Melanie Ortiz Alvarez de la Campa, and honoring the distinguished recipients of the Horace Mann Medal and the Joukowsky Prize. A massive thank you goes out to the family, friends, faculty, and mentors who filled the tent today to cheer on our graduates, as your unwavering support made today’s triumphs possible.

To our brand-new Ph.D. alumni: You have pushed the boundaries of human knowledge, questioned the status quo, and left an indelible mark on the Brunonian community. The world is immensely lucky to have your minds, your passion, and your expertise. Congratulations, Doctors!

Huge congratulations to Meg Shieh for winning the prestigious Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Award in the physical sciences!

Meg, who receives her doctoral degree in chemistry this May, is being recognized for her groundbreaking dissertation: “Chemical Tool Development for Elucidating the Mechanistic Roles of Sulfane Sulfur in Redox Signaling.” Her research tackles a massive challenge in chemical biology: creating innovative tools to detect, deliver, and understand reactive sulfur species, molecules that are crucial to cellular signaling and human disease, but historically incredibly difficult to measure.

Next up, Meg is headed to Bethesda, Maryland this July to begin her role as an NIH IRTA Postdoctoral Fellow. We can't wait to see how she continues to shape the future of medicine and chemical biology!
