THE RHODE ISLAND CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENT FEDERATION
The Federation is committed to educating, advocating and mobilizing Catholic school parents, public policy-makers and the general public to ensure that Catholic schools in Rhode Island are available, accessible and affordable to all who desire them. The Federation is committed to safeguarding the rights, privileges and entitlements that Catholic

school children and parents are guaranteed under the United States Constitution and under federal, state and local law. Membership is comprised of the parents and guardians of children enrolled in the Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Diocese of Providence. Parents and guardians of children formerly enrolled in the school in the Diocese may be associate members. Members may serve on the Federation advisory board, as committee members of the advisory board, and as school liaisons. Rhode Island Catholic School Parent Federation Initiatives
• Advocating for expansion of the RI State Tax Credit Program for non-public education, currently capped at $1 million for the Corporate Tax Credit, and to include a personal tax credit
•Educating and advocating for School Parental Choice, including legislation for school vouchers available for use at public schools, including charter schools, private schools, including religious schools, and for homeschooling parents
•Hosting the annual Catholic Schools Legislative Reception at the Rhode Island State House
•Educating on tax payer savings provided by taxpaying Catholic school parents

A Voice for Parents and Children

Official Catholic Church teaching has consistently affirmed the vital role of parents in the education of their children and the right to a school of their choosing. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “As those first responsible for the education of their children, parents have the right to choose a school for them which corresponds to their own convictions. This right is fundamental. As far as possible parents have the duty of choosing schools that will best help them in their task as Christian educators. Public authorities have the duty of guaranteeing this parental right and of ensuring the concrete conditions for its exercise.” (CCC §2229)

Additionally, the Code of Canon Laws emphasizes, “Parents must possess a true freedom in choosing schools; therefore, the Christian faithful must be concerned that civil society recognizes this freedom for parents and even supports it with subsidies; distributive justice is to be observed.” (Can. 797)
