The class looked at what makes wool an amazing material? What makes some sheep endangered? How did sheep end up in Iceland, Labrador, the Americas, and Australia? The class explored all this with hands-on experiments and case studies, looking at colonization, the “big farm” movement of monoculture, and the current resurgence of heritage breed farming and traditional ecological knowledge.
The students were so lucky to have access to the RISD Museum and to all of the beautiful indigenous wool textiles from the museum’s archives.
Special shout out to Sháńdíín Brown (RISD Curator, creative, and citizen of the Navajo Nation from Arizona), and RISD textiles educator Lyza Baum who guided the talented students and co-ran student work that was so incredibly inspiring, using waste wool as garden covers, unusual materials, exploring natural dyes as well as building an incredible loom featured here by Zoe Narkewicz made with found beach wood.
To more exploration and fiber and this next generation of the movement that will be leading the future of all things textiles🔥🐑🔥
Congratulations RISD Apparel students. Definitely a group of designers to keep your eyes on!

RISD Ready for the Runway Design student, Levi Campello joins us with some pieces from his collection that will soon debut on the runway.

Hi, I’m Cait of CAIT SHEA and this is my story: I studied apparel design at where I learned the art of pattern drafting, draping, tailoring and to really appreciate the fine art of clothing. Once I graduated the harsh reality of the fashion industry hit me like a brick wall...jobs (the few available) all entailed me sending technical designs to manufacturers overseas to be produced. Designers are completely removed from production, and the actual makers are viewed as faceless machines. Craftsmanship and quality have been replaced by profit margins and shareholders. I was repulsed and heartbroken! Always stubborn & defiant, I left NYC and returned to CT to build my own brand. I had no idea how to start my own line, but I was adamant that I’d never outsource any labour...quality would be top priority. I’ve stumbled and fumbled along the way, but I am proud of the brand that I am building. Each piece is made by hand in our Chester, CT studio by either myself or my assistant using all natural fibers and dead-stock fabrics. We put a lot of love into all that we do, and we truly want you to feel like your best self in our designs.
Ps. ✌🏻
