Hi, I'm Katelain, and this page is for the clarinet studio that I run in Providence, RI. I started learning clarinet in the 5th grade, and continued through high school. I attended URI and earned a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Music History and Literature in 2004. I then earned a master's in historical musicology from Tufts University in 2006. I started teach

Just yesterday I was telling a student of mine about how my four year plan got me through college in four years (with two degrees) without missing a class. It was probably one of the most valuable things I’ve learned: make a plan, even if you have to alter it later on.

My summer teaching schedule has ended, the long day of teaching on Monday at Rick’s, and then a few lessons on Tuesdays has exploded to take up the entire week. I d

If you've ever put a reed in your mouth, you need to watch this. Totally fascinating. And gross. And informative. Keep your equipment clean, it's easy and cheap to do, it's for your health!
Reed Mold: It's real! It's disgusting! (It's curable!) Science experiment time! Our mouths are cesspools of bacteria, and then we put reeds in them. What else do we think could possibly happen when those two go t...

November 5th, 10-4! It's the best day of the year for clarinetists!
If you're in the RI/southeast MA area, this is going to be a great day of all things clarinet! And I'm not just saying that because I'm presenting. Rick's does a fantastic job with all their instrument days, and this one will again be fun for clarinetists of all ages and abilities!
Little practice buddy is waiting patiently for "our" practice session. He'll sing along to anything from long tones and chromatic scales to Debussy and Mahler. But he particularly enjoys when I play Bingo for him.
Some I've played, some I want to play!

After trying out different mouthpieces and ligatures, Ashley found a setup that makes her sound fantastic! I had a lot of fun helping her out, too. Finding the right setup makes such a difference in sound, even more than the clarinet itself! Congrats, Ashley, you sound great!

Sometimes in rehearsal I don't have time to really make notes about what needs to be worked on. At least I can scribble out a note on where I need to focus!
This video has been blowing up my feed today. And for good reason, it's all pretty much accurate. Except for putting instruments in small cars. I've fit two clarinets, a bassoon, a bunch of recording equipment, and three people in a Mini Cooper. Little cars forever! 🚙🎷
Trust me, if I knew how to do this, I would have told you already. 😐
Yeah. It's like that. 😏
