When Michael Maltzan BArch 85/P 24 was chosen as the architect to lead the Sixth Street Viaduct overhaul, he drew from lessons he learned at RISD.

“What motivates me is what causes individuals or communities to make connections and the ways in which architecture allows separated people and constituencies to be woven together,” he says.

Congratulations to Nafis M. White 15 SC MFA 18 PR our 2023 RISD Serves Award Winner!

Nafis's work promotes discourse on and explores themes of identity, equality, and the political landscape while simultaneously honoring the resilience and power of a people whose very existence and aesthetics have been the subject of ridicule, persecution, and systemic erasure since their harrowing and iniquitous arrival upon these shores.

Congratulations to Andy Chen MFA 13 GD, the 2023 The RISD Alumni Emerging Leader Award Winner!

In considering who to give the award to, the committee looked for a recent alum who forged their own path, which Andy has done with Isometric Studios. The studio often addresses complex social issues, challenging cliches and stereotypes in visual culture.
