On we celebrate our founder Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf and the other visionary women who established RISD more than 40 years before women in America gained the right to vote. In 1877, Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf urged 34 members of the Rhode Island Women’s Centennial Commission to invest their group’s surplus funding of $1,675—which they had raised for RI’s contribution to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876—in founding a school of art and design. The chain of office—the ornate necklace that will be bestowed upon President Williams during the investiture ceremony—is a symbol of the president's authority and service to the college that harks back to medieval livery collars. It was crafted by former RISD Professor Merlin Szasz for the inauguration of late President Roger Mandle in 1994 and stands as a testament to the many skills RISD students must hone as they work to attain their degrees. The chain’s central silver medallion depicts Athena, the Greek goddess of learning and the arts, on one side and the motto vita brevis est ars longa on the other. This quote from the Greek physician Hippocrates effectively translates to “life is short, art long.”

RISD will come together to celebrate Inauguration Weekend October 7–8, beginning with the historic investiture of RISD’s 18th president, Crystal Williams, followed by a series of public events and panels exploring the concept of new spaces. Learn more and RSVP at: risd.edu/new-spaces.
