A partnership between the AICAD | Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and NOAA Fisheries Service embeds artists in our agency to bridge communities and spark innovation. The 2020 Fellow, Stephanie Littlebird Fogel, a Kalapuyan visual artist, worked with scientists, natural resource managers, and community members to research and implement creative strategies about the return of populations to blocked river habitats in California’s Central Valley.

Fogel created a series of watershed-specific “Welcome to Salmon Country” Signs featuring the body of a salmon with the landscape of their spawning waters. Stephanie created signs for the Yuba River, the Sacramento, Merced, and McCloud, each showing the unique physical characteristics of that specific river.

NOAA Fisheries and the AICAD | Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design selected Mickey L.D. Morgan, a visual and community practice artist and care worker, for the third Fisheries Art + Science Fellowship. Mickey is a visual and community practice artist and care worker. They are passionate about neighborliness, believing that every human and non-human part of an ecosystem are essential to all of our lives. This has been a strong theme in their work over the past 3 years.

The 2022 Fellowship will focus on connecting with communities to support recovery of seven listed salmon species native to the coast of California. Join us for Pathways to Design - A moderated panel featuring contributors from the new book The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Reflection & Expression. Find out more and register -> https://bit.ly/pathwaystodesign

Before young people are ever taught what design is or what the design professions are, they find it in their own lives. They make zines, collect postcards, redraw logos and cut out typography. In this panel, four artist-designers will share their early influences in art and design. We’ll ask, what might the K-12 environment do to help nurture more young people into design? How do we create more pathways to design, in particular, separate from fine art-centered classes? How do we navigate between different art and design spaces? How might finding our own paths actually have made us better, self-authoring, creative professionals?

Upending popular notions of innate artistic and visionary genius and, instead, probing the event of discovery that happens through the act of making, in his new book, Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery (Thames & Hudson), Dr. Lorne Buchman explores the revelatory nature of the creative journey itself. In contrast to the classic tale of Michelangelo, who “saw the angel in the stone,” the artists, entrepreneurs, innovators and designers featured in this book—from Chris Kraus and Frank Gehry to Zack Snyder, Aimee Bender, and Diana Thater, among many others—talk about knowing their work as they engage in the doing. As a result, Buchman reveals that creativity is rarely a “lightbulb moment” and instead arrives through a process of making and self-understanding.

The Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) invites you to join a conversation with Dr. Buchman as moderated by AICAD’s president and executive director, Deborah Obalil, during which they’ll discuss the implication of the "make to know" process on the delivery of arts and design education, the application to leadership in general, and the impact on institutional structures.

AICAD Presents: Make to Know, will take place on Zoom, Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 10–11 a.m. (PST)/1–2 p.m. (EST). Register today -> http://www.artcenter.edu/aicad-make-to-know

"It’s about the kind of person you are inside, your strength and confidence, and how that’s connected to everything else that will make you an ethical, creative, innovative, and caring designer. Those are the kind of designers we need in the world. We have enough design geniuses. We need caring people who have respect for everything in the world."

ABOUT THIS EVENT: In 2020, colleges and universities across the world have rushed to adapt to a new reality that questions the very nature of their work: a pandemic sent students home and protests shone a spotlight on inequality supported by many of our institutions, including those in higher education. Since March, everyone involved in education has had to rethink fundamentals and challenge core assumptions ranging from the format of instruction to what and who creates value. Since arts education is historically vulnerable to funding cuts and much of the instruction relies on hands-on studio classes, specialized equipment, in-person mentorship, and tuition dollars, the systemic changes necessary to thrive require radical, ethical thinking. What are the responsibilities and priorities being considered going into this exceptional academic year?
