🌎 JWU Global Wildcat of the Month 🌎

Each month, we celebrate a JWU Wildcat whose dedication and contributions help strengthen our global Wildcat community. This month, we’re especially proud to recognize MICHAEL MWANGI, AAS, BASc; our first international alumnus to be selected for this prestigious recognition.

Michael has built an impressive international hospitality career spanning more than 25 years, with experience across leading global hotel brands in the United States and Kenya. A proud JWU graduate, Michael credits his education, practical training, and the global perspective he gained at Johnson & Wales University as an important foundation for his career. Today, he is equally passionate about giving back, developing the next generation of hospitality professionals, creating opportunities for young people, and celebrating the richness of African hospitality. From leading a luxury hotel in Nairobi to mentoring students, supporting hospitality education, and contributing to industry initiatives, Michael continues to embody the spirit of a global Wildcat.

JWU’s September International Student Spotlight Is Here 🌏

We’re back for the 2026–27 academic year with our JWU International Student Spotlight Series, where every month we shine a light on a student who is making an impact and leaving their personal pawprint at Johnson & Wales University.

For this month, we are spotlighting our Food Innovation and Technology Graduate student, Abhimanyu Batra!

Abhi is pursuing a Master’s in Food Innovation and Technology graduating this semester. Abhi has been a part of the JWU legacy for almost half a decade now. He graduated with an Associate’s in Culinary Arts and Bachelor’s of Food & Beverage Industry Management in 2024. On his OPT, he worked as a Kitchen Supervisor at Castle Hill Inn, a Relais & Châteaux and Two MICHELIN Key property in Newport, Rhode Island. This experience allowed him to apply what he learned at JWU in a professional setting and grow as a leader in the food and hospitality industry.

When we asked Abhi about his relationship with JWU, he said, “JWU has given me much more than an education. It has given me opportunities to learn, grow professionally, and build a strong network of faculty, classmates, and industry professionals.”

Outside of academics, Abhi loved to travel and document his journeys with his Canon camera, garden and try new foods. He works on campus as a Supervisor at the Snowden Dining Hall. This job also allows him to stay connected to the JWU community while gaining valuable leadership experience. Don’t forget to say “Hi!” to Abhi when you stop by Snowden Dining Hall next time. He is a part of Little India and the Sustainability Clubs on campus.

His advice for International students:

“My biggest advice to international students would be to explore and travel as much as you can. Your time at JWU is about much more than what happens inside the classroom, and it’s important to actively integrate what you learn into your daily life. Take the opportunity to explore Rhode Island and the rest of the country, meet people from different backgrounds and different walks of life and embrace the uncomfortable. Most importantly, enjoy the journey and make the most of the time you have at JWU.”
