🕵️‍♀️💵 Financial Forensics in 7th Grade Accelerated ELA!

Students analyzed two months of Jordan Harper’s financial transactions, using the evidence to make inferences about his relationships, choices, and possible challenges. They examined details, developed theories, and supported their conclusions with evidence.

This engaging, real-world activity supported South Carolina’s seventh-grade ELA standards by requiring students to analyze details, make evidence-based inferences, and draw logical conclusions to construct meaning. Great detective work! 🔍📚

🎈🎶 Breathing Life into Beginning Band! 🎶🎈

Our 6th Grade Beginning Band students spent the week learning one of the foundations of becoming a strong musician—breath support!

Mrs. Tyson used balloons to give students a fun, hands-on way to visualize and feel just how much air it takes to produce a strong, controlled sound on their instruments. Sometimes the best learning happens when students can see, feel, and experience a concept for themselves!

These Rebels are building the fundamentals now that will help them make some great music throughout the year. 🎺🎷🎶

📚 Learning in Motion in 8th Grade ELA!

First-year teacher Coach Hedgepath had his 8th grade ELA students up, moving, talking, and thinking as they practiced making inferences from text.

Students moved around the classroom reading short passages, identifying what they could infer, and citing the clues from the text that supported their thinking. They also worked with partners to discuss their reasoning and compare responses.

This activity connects directly to 8th grade ELA expectations: drawing logical inferences, supporting conclusions with textual evidence, and communicating thinking with others. More importantly, students weren’t just completing a worksheet at their desks. They were actively engaging with the text and with one another.

Students work together in teams of four and compete using Jeopardy!-style questions covering a variety of subjects. It’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself, work with a team, and represent MCMS!

📚 8th Grade Families: PSAT Opportunity!

We encourage our 8th grade Rebels to consider taking the PSAT 8/9 on October 15! The PSAT 8/9 gives students an early opportunity to experience a college-readiness assessment, identify areas of strength, and become familiar with the types of questions they will encounter on future assessments.

📧 South Carolina Junior Scholars: Students participating in the Junior Scholars testing opportunity have already received information by email.

✏️ All other interested 8th graders: Students may sign up to take the PSAT 8/9 for a $14 testing fee.

📅 Deadline to sign up: Friday, September 25

Technology Fee FAQ
Due by Friday, September 4
Required Fee $25

This yearly fee is required of all students in K–12th grade and is used to cover costs of using 1:1 devices as well as shared technology resources on each campus.
The fee must be paid prior to September 4, unless arrangements have been made and documented in writing.

Why Pay?
The $25 required fee also covers accidental damage for the year:
1st accident – no cost to repair
2nd accident – $50 cost (or less if repair is less than $50)
3rd+ accidents – students/parents may be required to cover all or part of damage cost.

Intentional Damage
Any damages deemed by school and district administrators to be intentional will incur disciplinary actions based on the Behavior Matrix in addition to covering the full cost of repair, regardless of if the fee was paid.

Accidental Damage
Any damages deemed by school and district administrators to be accidental will be covered based on the outline above. Any accidental damage must be reported to the school’s administration as soon as possible after the damage occurs.

Payment Hardships
Families wishing to be considered for hardships for covering the $25 required fee should make a written request to their school’s principal, so arrangements can be made to assist the student and family.

Required?
Yes, the fee is required of all students in grades K–12 and must be paid in full by Friday, September 4.

Free to Focus prevents students from access their own personal devices while at school.

How to Protect My Device
The best way to avoid damages to your device is to carry it in a protective case.
Use it only as needed for school assignments.
Keep it away from food and drinks.
Do not allow anyone else to use your device.
Do not place anything on the keyboard when closing.
Do not leave it unattended or in an unlocked car.
Treat the device as you would your own property.

Consistent Access
The District will follow the below device schedule:
K – Issued iPad for one year
1st Grade – Issued laptop to keep through 5th Grade
6th Grade – Issued laptop to keep through 8th Grade
9th Grade – Issued laptop to keep through 12th Grade
It is imperative to care for the device as the same device will follow the student for several years.

Students in K–7th Grade leave devices at school each day unless specifically required by the school or teacher to be taken home.

Cash or check payable to the school’s bookkeeper. Pay digitally via eFunds.

🔬 Science in Action!

Our 8th grade scientists put friction to the test with a hands-on investigation! Students measured the amount of force needed to pull a block across different surfaces, then compared their results to see how surface type affects friction.

Beyond learning about forces and motion, students were building skills from the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate—critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and communication—as they collected data, analyzed results, and worked together.

Experiences like this help students connect what they learn in science to how forces work in the world around them. 🧪📊

🏝️ What would YOU choose to survive?

As a get-to-know-you activity, 8th grade students in Mr. Hanes’ Social Studies class faced a desert island challenge! Students worked in groups to decide which survival items they would keep if they found themselves stranded.

But the real challenge wasn’t choosing between the water, rope, compass, or first-aid kit—it was working together to reach a decision.

Students had to communicate, compromise, take on leadership roles, navigate disagreements, and defend their choices using critical thinking and reasoning.

While students were getting to know their classmates, they were also practicing skills from the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate: critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration and teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

College and career readiness starts long before graduation—and sometimes it starts on a deserted island! 🌴❤️🖤
