I have been working as an administrator and faculty member in higher education since 2001. Two primary responsibilities have been developing curriculum and course content, and helping other faculty members develop effective teaching techniques. Over the years I have worked with individuals who are excellent educators and can meet students “where they are”, and I have worked with others who are knowledgeable in their discipline, but struggle to connect with their students. The question of how best to reach students should be the primary concern for educators at all grade levels.

To address this concern in the changing educational landscape, Beacon Valley Literacy Services offers a wealth of resources, a foundation of knowledge based on both professional and personal experiences, and a healthy dose of compassion and understanding.

Melissa clearly has the ability to truly connect with kids, and understands that teaching other human beings is not a “one size fits all” situation. Learning styles are as unique as the children and young adults we hope to educate. Melissa’s insight and experience, and the incredible resources available at Beacon Valley Literacy Services demonstrate clearly that she understands how to help all students succeed, and does so in a manner that is uncommon in all my experience.

I suggest parents and educators of students at all grade levels take a minute to check out Beacon Valley Literacy Services

Orton Gillingham Tutoring

This one on one structured multi sensory approach to mastering reading helps children with reading difficulty internalize the rules of the English language and improves reading, writing and spelling. Each lesson is geared towards your child’s capabilities and builds confidence by learning each step entirely before moving on to the next step.
Program Structure:
Two to five weekly one hour sessions for a minimum of 16 sessions.
Pricing-$200 deposit and $125 per scheduled visit.

Wilson Tutoring

This structured reading system is based off of the Orton Gillingham approach and favored by many school districts. Each lesson is also mastery based, multi sensory and builds reading, spelling, and writing capabilities.

Program Structure:
Two to five weekly one hour sessions for a minimum of 16 sessions.
Pricing-$200 deposit and $125 per scheduled visit.

Summer Pilot Program Special

This program is only available for 8 families on a first come first serve basis.

Program Structure:
Two to five weekly one hour sessions for a minimum of 8 sessions.
Pricing-$200 deposit and $125 per scheduled visit.

Comprehension/Fluency/Phonemic Awareness/Phonics or General Tutoring

Targeted instruction will be based on your child’s needs. Results will vary and make an impact on one of these areas of the fundamentals of reading.

Program Structure:
One to two weekly sessions for a minimum of 12 sessions.
Pricing-$200 deposit and $125 per schedules visit.

Reading in the Content Area/Study Skills and Organization

Targeted instruction will be based on your child’s needs. Learning and performance in math, science, and social studies content areas can greatly be impacted by your child’s reading skills. I can design a program that includes strategies that will support readers in many different subject areas.
Study Skills and organizational skills also need to be explicitly taught as well. All children need to be directly taught these skills and this instruction is often times overlooked in typical classroom design.

Program Structure:
One to two weekly sessions for a minimum of 12 sessions.
Pricing-$200 deposit and $125 per schedules visit.

General information

Why hire a tutor? Often times learners need more time and targeted instruction to close the gap. Sometimes homework is a struggle and a busy classroom isn't the ideal environment for learning to read. I know that when I teach and tutor my own children it can become a power struggle and a time management issue so tutoring can minimize these issues. Why do you offer private in home tutoring? My goal is to provide easy and convenient in home private tutoring. Often times we learn best in a familiar environment such as our home. It's difficult to add another activity like tutoring to our busy schedules but it is integral to closing the learning gap. What is mastery based targeted instruction? Mastery based targeted instruction means that each lesson is structured to address holes or gaps in learning. Sometimes a child misses something or has difficulty distinguishing between vowel sounds so basically I create lessons and activities to address this weakness until the child learns it by heart automatically. What is explicit instruction? Explicit instruction is a holistic approach that considers a child’s unique learning process and means that I constantly monitor understanding to make sure students are deriving meaning from instruction. Some children need more explanation and practice to make gains in reading and language. What is direct and immediate feedback? During the lesson when a child makes a reading, writing, or a spelling error I immediately correct it using a multisensory technique or by stating the correct answer or writing the correct answer immediately before the incorrect response gets ingrained in your child’s memory. Children often times remember the mistakes they make more so than the correct answer and it becomes a habit. What is a multisensory technique? When it comes to reading, a multisensory technique means incorporating the senses to learn the fundamental basics of reading. Children often need a multisensory component to help move information from their short term memory to long term memory. Sometimes when children have difficulty reading multisensory instruction helps them make gains with processing and automatically identifying letter sounds and reading words.
